Luke 22

1Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.

10And he said to them: Behold, as you go into the city, there shall meet you a man carrying a pitcher of water: follow him into the house where he entereth in.

10And he said to them, `Lo, in your entering into the city, there shall meet you a man, bearing a pitcher of water, follow him to the house where he doth go in,

10And he said to them, When you go into the town you will see a man coming to you with a vessel of water; go after him into the house into which he goes.

11And ye shall say unto the master of the house, The Teacher saith unto thee, Where is the guest-chamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?

11And you shall say to the goodman of the house: The master saith to thee: Where is the guest chamber, where I may eat the pasch with my disciples?

11and ye shall say to the master of the house, The Teacher saith to thee, Where is the guest-chamber where the passover with my disciples I may eat?

11And say to the master of the house, The Master says, Where is the guest-room, where I may take the Passover with my disciples?

12And he will show you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.

13And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.

17And he received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:

18for I say unto you, I shall not drink from henceforth of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.

19And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

20And the cup in like manner after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, even that which is poured out for you.

21But behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.

21`But, lo, the hand of him delivering me up <FI>is<Fi> with me on the table,

21But the hand of him who is false to me is with me at the table.

22For the Son of man indeed goeth, as it hath been determined: but woe unto that man through whom he is betrayed!

22And the Son of man indeed goeth, according to that which is determined: but yet, woe to that man by whom he shall be betrayed.

22and indeed the Son of Man doth go according to what hath been determined; but woe to that man through whom he is being delivered up.'

22For it will be done to the Son of man after the purpose of God, but unhappy is that man by whom he is given up.

23And they began to question among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.

23And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.

24And there arose also a contention among them, which of them was accounted to be greatest.

25And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles have lordship over them; and they that have authority over them are called Benefactors.

25And he said to them, `The kings of the nations do exercise lordship over them, and those exercising authority upon them are called benefactors;

26But ye shall not be so: but he that is the greater among you, let him become as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.

26but ye <FI>are<Fi> not so, but he who is greater among you--let him be as the younger; and he who is leading, as he who is ministering;

27For which is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am in the midst of you as he that serveth.

27for who is greater? he who is reclining (at meat), or he who is ministering? is it not he who is reclining (at meat)? and I--I am in your midst as he who is ministering.

27For which is greater, the guest who is seated at a meal or the servant who is waiting on him? is it not the guest? but I am among you as a servant.

28But ye are they that have continued with me in my temptations;

28And you are they who have continued with me in my temptations:

28`And ye--ye are those who have remained with me in my temptations,

28But you are those who have kept with me through my troubles;

29and I appoint unto you a kingdom, even as my Father appointed unto me,

29And I dispose to you, as my Father hath disposed to me, a kingdom;

29and I appoint to you, as my Father did appoint to me, a kingdom,

29And I will give you a kingdom as my Father has given one to me,

30that ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom; and ye shall sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

30That you may eat and drink at my table, in my kingdom: and may sit upon thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

30that ye may eat and may drink at my table, in my kingdom, and may sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.'

30So that you may take food and drink at my table in my kingdom, and be seated like kings, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

31Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have you, that he might sift you as wheat:

31And the Lord said: Simon, Simon, behold Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat.

31And the Lord said, `Simon, Simon, lo, the Adversary did ask you for himself to sift as the wheat,

31Simon, Simon, Satan has made a request to have you, so that he may put you to the test as grain is tested:

32but I made supplication for thee, that thy faith fail not; and do thou, when once thou hast turned again, establish thy brethren.

32But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and thou, being once converted, confirm thy brethren.

32and I besought for thee, that thy faith may not fail; and thou, when thou didst turn, strengthen thy brethren.'

32But I have made prayer for you, that your faith may not go from you: and when you are turned again, make your brothers strong.

33And he said unto him, Lord, with thee I am ready to go both to prison and to death.

33Who said to him: Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison and to death.

33And he said to him, `Sir, with thee I am ready both to prison and to death to go;'

33And he said to him, Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.

34And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, until thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.

34And he said: I say to thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, till thou thrice deniest that thou knowest me. And he said to them:

34and he said, `I say to thee, Peter, a cock shall not crow to-day, before thrice thou mayest disown knowing me.'

34And he said, I say to you, Peter, before the cock's second cry today, you will say three times that you have no knowledge of me.

35And he said unto them, When I sent you forth without purse, and wallet, and shoes, lacked ye anything? And they said, Nothing.

35When I sent you without purse and scrip and shoes, did you want anything?

35And he said to them, `When I sent you without bag, and scrip, and sandals, did ye lack anything?' and they said, `Nothing.'

35And he said to them, When I sent you out without money or bag or shoes, were you in need of anything? And they said, Nothing.

36And he said unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise a wallet; and he that hath none, let him sell his cloak, and buy a sword.

36But they said: Nothing. Then said he unto them: But now he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise a scrip: and he that hath not, let him sell his coat and buy a sword.

36Then said he to them, `But, now, he who is having a bag, let him take <FI>it<Fi> up, and in like manner also a scrip; and he who is not having, let him sell his garment, and buy a sword,

36And he said to them, But now, he who has a money-bag, or a bag for food, let him take it: and he who has not, let him give his coat for money and get a sword.

37For I say unto you, that this which is written must be fulfilled in me, And he was reckoned with transgressors: for that which concerneth me hath fulfilment.

37For I say to you that this that is written must yet be fulfilled in me. And with the wicked was he reckoned. For the things concerning me have an end.

37for I say to you, that yet this that hath been written it behoveth to be fulfilled in me: And with lawless ones he was reckoned, for also the things concerning me have an end.'

37For I say to you that these words will be put into effect in me, And he was numbered among the evil-doers: for what has been said in the Writings about me has an end.

38And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

38But they said: Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said to them: It is enough.

38And they said, `Sir, lo, here <FI>are<Fi> two swords;' and he said to them, `It is sufficient.'

39And he came out, and went, as his custom was, unto the mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed him.

40And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.

41And he was parted from them about a stone’s cast; and he kneeled down and prayed,

41And he was withdrawn from them, as it were a stone's cast, and having fallen on the knees he was praying,

41And he went a little distance away from them and, falling on his knees in prayer, he said,

42saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

42Saying: Father, if thou wilt, remove this chalice from me: but yet not my will, but thine be done.

42saying, `Father, if Thou be counselling to make this cup pass from me--;but, not my will, but Thine be done.' --

42Father, if it is your pleasure, take this cup from me: but still, let your pleasure, not mine, be done.

43And there appeared unto him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.

43And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony, he prayed the longer.

43And there appeared to him a messenger from heaven strengthening him;

43And an angel from heaven came to him, to give him strength.

44And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became as it were great drops of blood falling down upon the ground.

44and having been in agony, he was more earnestly praying, and his sweat became, as it were, great drops of blood falling upon the ground.

44And being in great trouble of soul, the force of his prayer became stronger, and great drops, like blood, came from him, falling to the earth.

45And when he rose up from his prayer, he came unto the disciples, and found them sleeping for sorrow,

45And when he rose up from prayer and was come to the disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow.

45And having risen up from the prayer, having come unto the disciples, he found them sleeping from the sorrow,

45And, getting up from prayer, he came to the disciples, and saw that they were sleeping for sorrow.

46and said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, that ye enter not into temptation.

46And he said to them: Why sleep you? Arise: pray: lest you enter into temptation.

46and he said to them, `Why do ye sleep? having risen, pray that ye may not enter into temptation.'

46And he said, Why are you sleeping? Get up, and give yourselves to prayer, so that you may not be put to the test.

47While he yet spake, behold, a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them; and he drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.

47As he was yet speaking, behold a multitude; and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus, for to kiss him.

47And while he is speaking, lo, a multitude, and he who is called Judas, one of the twelve, was coming before them, and he came nigh to Jesus to kiss him,

47And while he was saying these words, there came a band of people, and Judas, one of the twelve, was in front of them, and he came near to Jesus to give him a kiss.

48But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?

48And Jesus said to him: Judas, dost thou betray the Son of man with a kiss?

48and Jesus said to him, `Judas, with a kiss the Son of Man dost thou deliver up?'

48But Jesus said to him, Judas, will you be false to the Son of man with a kiss?

49And when they that were about him saw what would follow, they said, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?

49And they that were about him, seeing what would follow, said to him: Lord, shall we strike with the sword?

49And those about him, having seen what was about to be, said to him, `Sir, shall we smite with a sword?'

49And when those who were with him saw what was coming, they said, Lord, may we not make use of our swords?

50And a certain one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and struck off his right ear.

50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.

50And a certain one of them smote the servant of the chief priest, and took off his right ear,

50And one of them gave a blow to the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.

51But Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye them thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.

51But Jesus answering, said: Suffer ye thus far. And when he had touched his ear, he healed him.

51and Jesus answering said, `Suffer ye thus far,' and having touched his ear, he healed him.

51But Jesus, answering, said, Put up with this, at least. And touching his ear, he made it well.

52And Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and elders, that were come against him, Are ye come out, as against a robber, with swords and staves?

52And Jesus said to the chief priests and magistrates of the temple and the ancients, that were come unto him: Are ye come out, as it were against a thief, with swords and clubs?

52And Jesus said to those having come upon him--chief priests, and magistrates of the temple, and elders--`As upon a robber have ye come forth, with swords and sticks?

52And Jesus said to the chief priests and the captains of the Temple and the rulers, who had come against him, Have you come out as against a thief, with swords and sticks?

53When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched not forth your hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

53When I was daily with you in the temple, you did not stretch forth your hands against me: but this is your hour and the power of darkness.

53while daily I was with you in the temple, ye did stretch forth no hands against me; but this is your hour and the power of the darkness.'

53When I was in the Temple with you every day, your hands were not stretched out against me: but this is your hour, and the authority of the dark power.

54And they seized him, and led himaway, and brought him into the high priest’s house. But Peter followed afar off.

54And apprehending him, they led him to the high priest's house. But Peter followed afar off.

54And having taken him, they led and brought him to the house of the chief priest. And Peter was following afar off,

54And they made him a prisoner and took him away to the house of the high priest. But Peter went after them at a distance.

55And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the court, and had sat down together, Peter sat in the midst of them.

55And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall and were sitting about it, Peter was in the midst of them.

55and they having kindled a fire in the midst of the court, and having sat down together, Peter was sitting in the midst of them,

55And a fire was lighted in the middle of the open square, and they were seated together, and Peter was among them.

56And a certain maid seeing him as he sat in the light of the fire, and looking stedfastly upon him, said, This man also was with him.

56Whom when a certain servant maid had seen sitting at the light and had earnestly beheld him, she said: This man also was with him.

56and a certain maid having seen him sitting at the light, and having earnestly looked at him, she said, `And this one was with him!'

56And a certain woman-servant, seeing him in the light of the fire, and looking at him with attention, said, This man was with him.

57But he denied, saying, Woman, I know him not.

57But he denied him, saying: Woman, I know him not.

57and he disowned him, saying, `Woman, I have not known him.'

57But he said, Woman, it is not true; I have no knowledge of him.

58And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou also art one of them. But Peter said, Man, I am not.

58And after a little while, another seeing him, said: Thou also art one of them. But Peter said: O man, I am not.

58And after a little, another having seen him, said, `And thou art of them!' and Peter said, `Man, I am not.'

58And after a little time, another saw him and said, You are one of them; and he said, Man, I am not.

59And after the space of about one hour another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this man also was with him; for he is a Galilæan.

59And after the space, as it were of one hour, another certain man affirmed, saying: Of a truth, this man was also with him: for he is also a Galilean.

59And one hour, as it were, having intervened, a certain other was confidently affirming, saying, `Of a truth this one also was with him, for he is also a Galilean;'

59And after about an hour, another man said, with decision, Certainly this man was with him, for he is a Galilaean.

60But Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.

60And Peter said: Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, as he was yet speaking, the cock crew.

60and Peter said, `Man, I have not known what thou sayest;' and presently, while he is speaking, a cock crew.

60And Peter said, Man, I have no knowledge of these things of which you are talking. And straight away, while he was saying these words, there came the cry of a cock.

61And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how that he said unto him, Before the cock crow this day thou shalt deny me thrice.

61And the Lord turning looked on Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, as he had said: Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny thrice.

61And the Lord having turned did look on Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he said to him--`Before a cock shall crow, thou mayest disown me thrice;'

61And the Lord, turning, gave Peter a look. And the words of the Lord came to Peter's mind, how he had said, This night, before the hour of the cock's cry, you will be false to me three times.

62And he went out, and wept bitterly.

62And Peter going out, wept bitterly.

62and Peter having gone without, wept bitterly.

62And he went out, weeping bitterly.

63And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and beat him.

63And the men that held him mocked him and struck him.

63And the men who were holding Jesus were mocking him, beating <FI>him<Fi> ;

63And the men in whose hands Jesus was, made sport of him and gave him blows.

64And they blindfolded him, and asked him, saying, Prophesy: who is he that struck thee?

64And they blindfolded him and smote his face. And they asked him saying: Prophesy: Who is it that struck thee?

64and having blindfolded him, they were striking him on the face, and were questioning him, saying, `Prophesy who he is who smote thee?'

64And, covering his eyes, they said to him, Are you prophet enough to say who gave you that blow?

65And many other things spake they against him, reviling him.

65And blaspheming, many other things they said against him.

65and many other things, speaking evilly, they spake in regard to him.

65And they said a number of other evil things against him.

66And as soon as it was day, the assembly of the elders of the people was gathered together, both chief priests and scribes; and they led him away into their council, saying,

66And as soon as it was day, the ancients of the people and the chief priests and scribes came together. And they brought him into their council saying: If thou be the Christ, tell us.

66And when it became day there was gathered together the eldership of the people, chief priests also, and scribes, and they led him up to their own sanhedrim,

66And when it was day, the rulers of the people came together, with the chief priests and the scribes, and they took him before their Sanhedrin, saying,

67If thou art the Christ, tell us. But he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:

67And he saith to them: If I shall tell you, you will not believe me.

67saying, `If thou be the Christ, tell us.' And he said to them, `If I may tell you, ye will not believe;

67If you are the Christ, say so. But he said, If I say so you will not have belief;

68and if I ask you, ye will not answer.

68And if I shall also ask you, you will not answer me, nor let me go.

68and if I also question <FI>you<Fi> , ye will not answer me or send me away;

68And if I put a question to you, you will not give an answer.

69But from henceforth shall the Son of man be seated at the right hand of the power of God.

69But hereafter the Son of man shall be sitting on the right hand of the power of God.

69henceforth, there shall be the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of the power of God.'

69But in the future the Son of man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.

70And they all said, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.

70Then said they all: Art thou then the Son of God? Who said: You say that I am.

70And they all said, `Thou, then, art the Son of God?' and he said unto them, `Ye say <FI>it<Fi> , because I am;'

70And they all said, Are you then the Son of God? and he said, You say that I am.

71And they said, What further need have we of witness? for we ourselves have heard from his own mouth.

71And they said: What need we any further testimony? For we ourselves have heard it from his own mouth.

71and they said, `What need yet have we of testimony? for we ourselves did hear <FI>it<Fi> from his mouth.'

71And they said, What more need have we of witness? we have the very words of his mouth.
