What Luke 22:37 means

Jesus explains the reason for the shift: Scripture must be fulfilled in Him—“And he was reckoned with transgressors.” He will be treated as a criminal, though sinless, standing in the place of sinners. This fulfills God’s ancient plan and underlies the disciples’ coming hardship: their association with Him will mark them as lawbreakers in the world’s eyes. The phrase “that which concerneth me hath fulfilment” underscores divine necessity; the cross is not detour but destination. By embracing this identification with transgressors, Jesus becomes the atoning substitute. The disciples must not be surprised when they face rejection. The verse ties practical instructions to prophetic fulfillment, centering everything on Jesus as the suffering Servant.

Context

After telling them to prepare for a hostile environment, Jesus grounds the new reality in Scripture’s decree that He be counted among the lawless. This connects their practical readiness to His redemptive mission. The disciples, missing the symbolic intent, respond by pointing out two swords. Jesus, recognizing the limit of their understanding at the moment, concludes the matter with, “It is enough,” and leads them out to the familiar place on the mount of Olives for prayer.

v.36And he said unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise a wallet; and he that hath none, let him sell his cloak, and buy a sword.

v.37This passage

v.38And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.
