What Luke 22:70 means

All ask, “Art thou then the Son of God?” Jesus replies, “Ye say that I am.” He affirms their formulation, placing responsibility back on them. The answer is both acceptance and judicial wisdom—it uses their words while acknowledging the truth. The claim “Son of God” expresses unique filial relationship and divine authority, consistent with His previous declaration about the Son of man’s exaltation. The leaders have now heard enough to condemn Him, not for deeds but for identity. Jesus does not recant; He stands in truth even when it seals His fate. The verse crystallizes the issue: who is Jesus? Their rejection contrasts with the faith of those who confess Him as Lord. Here, truth is met with hardened hearts.

Context

After Jesus’ assertion of the Son of man’s exaltation, the council unites to press the climactic question of His divine Sonship. His answer, affirming in their terms, becomes the decisive admission they sought. Immediately the council will declare that no further testimony is needed because they have heard it from His own mouth. The chapter will thus close with the leaders prepared to deliver Him to Roman authority for trial and execution.

v.69But from henceforth shall the Son of man be seated at the right hand of the power of God.

v.70This passage

v.71And they said, What further need have we of witness? for we ourselves have heard from his own mouth.
