What Luke 22:57 means

Peter denies, saying, “Woman, I know him not.” Fear speaks plainly; he disowns even acquaintance with Jesus. This is not a momentary lapse but the first step in a pattern that will repeat twice more. The one who pledged prison and death now evades a servant girl. The verse reveals how quickly self-reliance collapses under pressure. It also sets up the mercy to come, for Jesus had prayed that Peter’s faith not fail utterly. Peter’s words are stark, showing the depth of human frailty. Yet they will not be the last word. The denial fulfills Jesus’ prophecy and serves as the bitter classroom in which Peter learns grace, humility, and dependence on divine strength rather than boastful promises.

Context

After the servant girl’s accusation, Peter issues his first denial. The narrative will proceed with another person shortly recognizing him and accusing him of being one of Jesus’ followers. Peter will deny again. About an hour later, a third person will confidently assert Peter’s association, citing his Galilæan accent, and Peter will vehemently deny once more. Immediately the cock will crow, prompting Jesus to turn and look at Peter, leading to Peter’s bitter weeping.
