What Luke 22:28 means

Jesus honors the disciples: “ye are they that have continued with me in my temptations.” Despite their flaws, they have stood by Him through trials—rejection, opposition, and hardship. He sees their loyalty and affirms it. This encouragement frames the call to humble service not as a rebuke only, but as recognition of grace already at work. Their companionship in suffering will be rewarded with companionship in glory. The verse shows Jesus’ pastoral heart: He corrects pride without crushing spirits. He values perseverance more than flashes of zeal. Though they will soon stumble, He speaks hope over them, anchoring them in relationship with Him. Faithful endurance alongside the suffering Messiah is precious in His sight.

Context

After redefining greatness by service and modeling it Himself, Jesus now commends the disciples’ perseverance. This prepares the way for a promise: He will appoint to them a kingdom as the Father appointed to Him. That promise includes table fellowship in His kingdom and thrones judging Israel’s tribes. The flow reassures them of future honor while keeping their present calling humble. Immediately afterward, He will warn Simon about Satan’s sifting and promise His intercession.

v.27For which is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am in the midst of you as he that serveth.

v.28This passage

v.29and I appoint unto you a kingdom, even as my Father appointed unto me,
