What Luke 22:5 means
The leaders’ gladness exposes their hearts. They rejoice not at truth or justice, but at the opportunity to eliminate a rival. They covenant to give Judas money, making the betrayal a transaction. The exchange of cash cheapens sacred trust and turns friendship into a commodity. Scripture often warns about the love of money; here it plays a role in the darkest deed. Their agreement formalizes the plot, binding both parties to a wicked pact. Yet even as they count coins, heaven’s purpose advances. The Messiah will be betrayed for a price, and by these human arrangements the appointed hour draws near. Their joy is short-lived; God will overrule their sin for salvation’s sake.

Context
This verse follows Judas’s approach to the authorities with the leaders’ eager acceptance and a financial bargain. Having secured Judas’s cooperation, the leaders now await a discreet moment. The next line will say Judas consented and sought such an opportunity, underscoring secrecy. Soon after, Luke will pivot from plotting to preparation for the Passover meal, juxtaposing treachery with Jesus’ faithful love expressed at the table.
