What Luke 22:8 means

Jesus takes the initiative, sending Peter and John to prepare the Passover. He directs both the who and the what: “Go and make ready for us…that we may eat.” This shows His control in the midst of looming betrayal and arrest. The Passover is not canceled by danger; it is kept and fulfilled. Choosing these two prominent disciples underlines the act’s importance and ensures reliable preparation. Their obedience will secure the place, the meal, and the setting for Jesus’ final teachings before His arrest. The verse displays the Lord as careful shepherd—providing, planning, and including His own in the sacred observance He will soon redefine through His sacrificial death.

Context

Having established the festival timing, Luke shows Jesus actively arranging the Passover meal. Immediately the disciples ask where to prepare, and Jesus gives precise directions about a man with a water pitcher and a furnished upper room. This preparation section culminates with the meal beginning. At the table Jesus will express His desire to eat with them, predict His abstinence until the kingdom, institute the bread and cup, and announce the betrayer’s presence.

v.7And the day of unleavened bread came, on which the passover must be sacrificed.

v.8This passage

v.9And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we make ready?
