What Mark 1:8 means
John further distinguished his baptism, performed with water for repentance, from the baptism of the coming One, who would baptize with the Holy Spirit. This highlights Jesus' unique power and mission: to impart the indwelling presence and transformative power of God's Spirit. John's water baptism was symbolic and preparatory, but Jesus' Spirit baptism would bring a complete spiritual renewal and empowerment, signifying the dawn of a new covenant reality, pointing forward to Pentecost.

Context
This verse builds upon John's declaration of an even mightier one coming after him in verse 7. It clarifies the ultimate difference and superiority of Jesus' ministry, not just in person but in spiritual power. This contrast immediately precedes Jesus' arrival, baptism, and the descent of the Holy Spirit, which serves as a direct fulfillment and illustration of John's prophecy.
