Greek · Strong's G1056
Γαλιλαία
Galilaía (Gal-il-EYE-ah)
proper noun
Galilee was a region in northern ancient Israel, bordering Syria and Phoenicia, where Jesus spent most of his earthly life and ministry.
Galilee was a large region in northern Palestine, west of the Jordan River. It was a fertile area, known for its agriculture and fishing, and was home to a diverse population of Jews and Gentiles. The name "Galilee" itself means "circle" or "district," possibly referring to the circular shape of the Sea of Galilee or to the surrounding Gentile populations. In the New Testament, Galilee is prominently featured as the primary setting for Jesus' ministry. He grew up in Nazareth, a Galilean town, and much of his public teaching, healing, and miracle-working occurred in the cities and villages around the Sea of Galilee, such as Capernaum, Bethsaida, and Chorazin. Galilee's reputation as a somewhat Hellenized region, and its distance from the religious center of Jerusalem, sometimes led to it being viewed with a degree of disdain by Judeans. This is highlighted in the question, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" (John 1:46) and the assertion that "out of Galilee ariseth no prophet" (John 7:52). Despite these perspectives, it was to Galilee that the resurrected Jesus directed his disciples to meet him, marking it as a significant place for the early Christian movement. The Gospels frequently depict Jesus traveling through Galilee, teaching in its synagogues, and interacting with its people, thus solidifying its identity as the heartland of his earthly ministry.
