John 7

1And after these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Judæa, because the Jews sought to kill him.

1After this, Jesus traveled around in Galilee. He did not want to travel in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him.

2Now the feast of the Jews, the feast of tabernacles, was at hand.

2The Jewish Festival of Shelters was coming up.

3His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judæa, that thy disciples also may behold thy works which thou doest.

3So Jesus’ brothers said to him, 'You should leave here and go to Judea so that your followers there can see the miracles you do.'

4For no man doeth anything in secret, and himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou doest these things, manifest thyself to the world.

4'No one who wants to be famous does things in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world!'

5For even his brethren did not believe on him.

5Even his own brothers did not believe in him.

6Jesus therefore saith unto them, My time is not yet come; but your time is always ready.

6Jesus told them, 'The right time for me has not come yet, but any time is right for you.'

7The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that its works are evil.

7'The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I tell the truth about its evil deeds.'

8Go ye up unto the feast: I go not up unto this feast; because my time is not yet fulfilled.

8'You go on to the festival. I am not going to this festival yet, because my time has not fully come.'

9And having said these things unto them, he abode still in Galilee.

9After he said this, he stayed behind in Galilee.

10But when his brethren were gone up unto the feast, then went he also up, not publicly, but as it were in secret.

10But after his brothers had left for the festival, Jesus also went, not openly, but secretly.

11The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?

11At the festival, the Jewish leaders were looking for him and asking, 'Where is that man?'

12And there was much murmuring among the multitudes concerning him: some said, He is a good man; others said, Not so, but he leadeth the multitude astray.

12There was a lot of whispering about him in the crowds. Some said, 'He is a good man,' while others said, 'No, he is tricking the people.'

13Yet no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

13But no one would speak out loud about him because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.

14But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

14When the festival was half over, Jesus went up to the temple courtyard and began to teach.

15The Jews therefore marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

15The Jewish leaders were amazed and asked, 'How does this man know so much? He was never educated.'

16Jesus therefore answered them, and said, My teaching is not mine, but his that sent me.

16Jesus answered them, 'My teaching is not my own; it comes from the one who sent me.'

17If any man willeth to do his will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God, or whether I speak from myself.

17'If anyone chooses to do God’s will, they will find out whether my teaching comes from God or if I am just speaking on my own.'

18He that speaketh from himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

18'Whoever speaks on their own does it to get glory for themselves. But whoever works for the glory of the one who sent them is a person of integrity; there is nothing false in them.'

19Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you doeth the law? Why seek ye to kill me?

19'Didn't Moses give you the law? Yet none of you obeys the law. Why are you trying to kill me?'

20The multitude answered, Thou hast a demon: who seeketh to kill thee?

20The crowd answered, 'You are possessed by a demon! Who is trying to kill you?'

21Jesus answered and said unto them, I did one work, and ye all marvel because thereof.

21Jesus replied, 'I did one miracle, and you are all shocked.'

22Moses hath given you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers); and on the sabbath ye circumcise a man.

22'Moses gave you the rule of circumcision—though it really started with the patriarchs, not Moses—and you perform circumcision even on the Sabbath.'

23If a man receiveth circumcision on the sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be broken; are ye wroth with me, because I made a man every whit whole on the sabbath?

23'If a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses isn't broken, why are you angry at me for making a man's whole body well on the Sabbath?'

24Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

24'Stop judging by how things look on the outside. Judge fairly and correctly.'

25Some therefore of them of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?

25Then some of the people from Jerusalem said, 'Isn't this the man they are trying to kill?'

26And lo, he speaketh openly, and they say nothing unto him. Can it be that the rulers indeed know that this is the Christ?

26'But look! He is speaking in public, and they aren't saying anything to him. Have the authorities actually decided that he is the Messiah?'

27Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when the Christ cometh, no one knoweth whence he is.

27'But we know where this man comes from. When the Messiah comes, no one is supposed to know where he is from.'

28Jesus therefore cried in the temple, teaching and saying, Ye both know me, and know whence I am; and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.

28While Jesus was teaching in the temple courtyard, he cried out, 'So you know me and you know where I am from? I did not come on my own. The one who sent me is true, and you don't know him.'

29I know him; because I am from him, and he sent me.

29'I know him because I come from him, and he sent me.'

30They sought therefore to take him: and no man laid his hand on him, because his hour was not yet come.

30Then they tried to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him because his time had not yet come.

31But of the multitude many believed on him; and they said, When the Christ shall come, will he do more signs than those which this man hath done?

31Many people in the crowd believed in him. They said, 'When the Messiah comes, will he perform more miraculous signs than this man has done?'

32The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning him; and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to take him.

32The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about him. So the leading priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

33Jesus therefore said, Yet a little while am I with you, and I go unto him that sent me.

33Then Jesus said, 'I will be with you for only a little while longer, and then I am going back to the one who sent me.'

34Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, ye cannot come.

34'You will look for me, but you won't find me; and where I am, you cannot come.'

35The Jews therefore said among themselves, Whither will this man go that we shall not find him? will he go unto the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?

35The Jewish leaders said to each other, 'Where does he plan to go that we won't find him? Is he going to the Greek cities where our people are scattered to teach the Greeks?'

36What is this word that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me; and where I am, ye cannot come?

36'What did he mean when he said, "You will look for me, but you won't find me," and "Where I am, you cannot come"?'

37Now on the last day, the greatdayof the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink.

37On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and shouted to the crowd, 'If anyone is thirsty, let them come to me and drink!'

38He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, from within him shall flow rivers of living water.

38'Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture says, rivers of living water will flow from within them.'

39But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believed on him were to receive: for the Spirit was not yet given; because Jesus was not yet glorified.

39He was talking about the Spirit, which those who believed in him would receive later. The Spirit had not been given yet because Jesus had not yet been raised to glory.

40Some of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, This is of a truth the prophet.

40When they heard these words, some people in the crowd said, 'This man is surely the Prophet we are waiting for.'

41Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, What, doth the Christ come out of Galilee?

41Others said, 'He is the Messiah.' But some asked, 'Would the Messiah come from Galilee?'

42Hath not the scripture said that the Christ cometh of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?

42'Doesn't the Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?'

43So there arose a division in the multitude because of him.

43So the crowd was divided because of him.

44And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.

44Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one actually touched him.

45The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why did ye not bring him?

45When the temple guards returned, the leading priests and Pharisees asked them, 'Why didn't you bring him in?'

46The officers answered, Never man so spake.

46The guards answered, 'No one has ever spoken the way this man does!'

47The Pharisees therefore answered them, Are ye also led astray?

47The Pharisees replied, 'Have you been fooled too?'

48Hath any of the rulers believed on him, or of the Pharisees?

48'Has any of the authorities or any of the Pharisees believed in him?'

49But this multitude that knoweth not the law are accursed.

49'But this crowd that doesn't know the law is under a curse.'

50Nicodemus saith unto them (he that came to him before, being one of them),

50Then Nicodemus, the man who had visited Jesus before and who was one of their own group, spoke up.

51Doth our law judge a man, except it first hear from himself and know what he doeth?

51He asked, 'Does our law allow us to judge a man without hearing from him first to find out what he is doing?'

52They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and see that out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.

52They replied, 'Are you from Galilee too? Look into it and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.'

53[And they went every man unto his own house:

53Then everyone went home.
