What John 7:40 means

Hearing Jesus’ words, some in the crowd say, “This is of a truth the prophet,” referring to the expected prophet like Moses. They hear authority and revelation that echo Moses’ role and promises. Their identification shows progress, yet stops short of confessing Him as the Christ. It reflects an awareness that God had promised a singular, Spirit-filled spokesman. The verse portrays the stirring effect of Jesus’ invitation: it awakens Scriptural hopes. Yet the crowd remains divided, revealing how partial understandings can both guide toward truth and, if clung to, limit full recognition of who Jesus is.

Context

After the promise of living water and John’s explanation about the Spirit, the crowd’s opinions crystallize. One group recognizes a prophetic fulfillment, while others will assert He is the Christ (verse 41). Still others raise objections based on His Galilean association and Scripture’s promise about Davidic lineage and Bethlehem (verses 41–42). These competing assessments lead to open division (verse 43).

v.39But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believed on him were to receive: for the Spirit was not yet given; because Jesus was not yet glorified.

v.40This passage

v.41Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, What, doth the Christ come out of Galilee?
