What John 15:14 means

Jesus establishes the condition for His disciples to be called His "friends": they must "do the things which I command you." This isn't a burdensome legalism, but a natural outflow of the loving relationship. Obedience becomes the identifier of true friendship with Christ; it is the evidence of their trust and devotion to Him, confirming their place within His inner circle rather than merely being servants.

Context

Following the sublime definition of love (to lay down one's life), Jesus here clarifies the practical implication for His disciples. This verse marks a distinct shift from the previous emphasis on love as an abstract ideal to the concrete action required of them, setting up the explanation of their elevated status as His friends.

v.13Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

v.14This passage

v.15No longer do I call you servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I heard from my Father I have made known unto you.
