1Before the festival day of the pasch, Jesus knowing that his hour was come, that he should pass out of this world to the Father: having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
1Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come that he should depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, loved them to the end.
1Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own that were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
2And when supper was done (the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him),
2And during supper, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas [son] of Simon, Iscariote, that he should deliver him up,
2And during supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,
3Knowing that the Father had given him all things into his hands and that he came from God and goeth to God,
3[Jesus,] knowing that the Father had given him all things into his hands, and that he came out fromGod and was going toGod,
3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came forth from God, and goeth unto God,
4He riseth from supper and layeth aside his garments and, having taken a towel, girded himself.
4rises from supper and lays aside his garments, and having taken a linen towel he girded himself:
4riseth from supper, and layeth aside his garments; and he took a towel, and girded himself.
5After that, he putteth water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
5then he pours water into the washhand basin, and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them with the linen towel with which he was girded.
5Then he poureth water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
6He cometh therefore to Simon Peter. And Peter saith to him: Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
6He comes therefore to Simon Peter; and he says to him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
6So he cometh to Simon Peter. He saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
7Jesus answered and said to him: What I do, thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
7Jesus answered and said to him, What I do thou dost not know now, but thou shalt know hereafter.
7Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt understand hereafter.
8Peter saith to him: Thou shalt never wash my feet, Jesus answered him: If I wash thee not, thou shalt have no part with me.
8Peter says to him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, Unless I wash thee, thou hast not part with me.
8Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
9Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.
9Simon Peter says to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
9Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
10Jesus saith to him: He that is washed needeth not but to wash his feet, but is clean wholly. And you are clean, but not all.
10Jesus says to him, He that is washed all over needs not to wash save his feet, but is wholly clean; and ye are clean, but not all.
10Jesus saith to him, He that is bathed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
11For he knew who he was that would betray him; therefore he said: You are not all clean.
11For he knew him that delivered him up: on account of this he said, Ye are not all clean.
11For he knew him that should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.
12Then after he had washed their feet and taken his garments, being set down again, he said to them: Know you what I have done to you?
12When therefore he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, having sat down again, he said to them, Do ye know what I have done to you?
12So when he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, and sat down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
13You call me Master and Lord. And you say well: for so I am.
13Ye call me the Teacher and the Lord, and ye say well, for I am [so].
13Ye call me, Teacher, and, Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
14If then I being your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another's feet.
14If I therefore, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet;
14If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.
15For I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, so you do also.
15for I have given you an example that, as I have done to you, ye should do also.
15For I have given you an example, that ye also should do as I have done to you.
16Amen, amen, I say to you: The servant is not greater than his lord: neither is the apostle greater than he that sent him.
16Verily, verily, I say to you, The bondman is not greater than his lord, nor the sent greater than he who has sent him.
16Verily, verily, I say unto you, A servant is not greater than his lord; neither one that is sent greater than he that sent him.
17If you know these things, you shall be blessed if you do them.
17If ye know these things, blessed are ye if ye do them.
17If ye know these things, blessed are ye if ye do them.
18I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen. But that the scripture may be fulfilled: He that eateth bread with me shall lift up his heel against me,
18I speak not of you all. I know those whom I have chosen; but that the scripture might be fulfilled, He that eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.
18I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth my bread lifted up his heel against me.
19At present I tell you, before it come to pass: that when it shall come to pass, you may believe that I am he.
19I tell you [it] now before it happens, that when it happens, ye may believe that I am [he].
19From henceforth I tell you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.
20Amen, amen, I say to you, he that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me: and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
20Verily, verily, I say to you, He who receives whomsoever I shall send receives me; and he that receives me receives him who has sent me.
20Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
21When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit; and he testified, and said: Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you shall betray me.
21Having said these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you shall deliver me up.
21When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in the spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
22The disciples therefore looked one upon another, doubting of whom he spoke.
22The disciples therefore looked one on another, doubting of whom he spoke.
22The disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.
23Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
23Now there was at table one of his disciples in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus loved.
23There was at the table reclining in Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
24Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him and said to him: Who is it of whom he speaketh?
24Simon Peter makes a sign therefore to him to ask who it might be of whom he spoke.
24Simon Peter therefore beckoneth to him, and saith unto him, Tell us who it is of whom he speaketh.
25He therefore, leaning on the breast of Jesus, saith to him: Lord, who is it?
25But he, leaning on the breast of Jesus, says to him, Lord, who is it?
25He leaning back, as he was, on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?
26Jesus answered: He it is to whom I shall reach bread dipped. And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
26Jesus answers, He it is to whom I, after I have dipped the morsel, give it. And having dipped the morsel, he gives it to Judas [son] of Simon, Iscariote.
26Jesus therefore answereth, He it is, for whom I shall dip the sop, and give it him. So when he had dipped the sop, he taketh and giveth it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
27And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him: That which thou dost, do quickly.
27And, after the morsel, then entered Satan into him. Jesus therefore says to him, What thou doest, do quickly.
27And after the sop, then entered Satan into him. Jesus therefore saith unto him, What thou doest, do quickly.
28Now no man at the table knew to what purpose he said this unto him.
28But none of those at table knew why he said this to him;
28Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
29For some thought, because Judas had the purse, that Jesus had said to him: Buy those things which we have need of for the festival day: or that he should give something to the poor.
29for some supposed, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus was saying to him, Buy the things of which we have need for the feast; or that he should give something to the poor.
29For some thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus said unto him, Buy what things we have need of for the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.
30He therefore, having received the morsel, went out immediately. And it was night.
30Having therefore received the morsel, he went out immediately; and it was night.
30He then having received the sop went out straightway: and it was night.
31When he therefore was gone out, Jesus said: Now is the Son of man glorified; and God is glorified in him.
31When therefore he was gone out Jesus says, Now is the Son of man glorified, andGod is glorified in him.
31When therefore he was gone out, Jesus saith, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him;
32If God be glorified in him, God also will glorify him in himself: and immediately will he glorify him.
32IfGod be glorified in him,God also shall glorify him in himself, and shall glorify him immediately.
32and God shall glorify him in himself, and straightway shall he glorify him.
33Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You shall seek me. And as I said to the Jews: Whither I go you cannot come; so I say to you now.
33Children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me; and, as I said to the Jews, Where I go ye cannot come, I say to you also now.
33Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say unto you.
34A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
34A new commandment I give to you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
34A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; even as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another.
35By this shall all know that ye are disciples of mine, if ye have love amongst yourselves.
35By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
36Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered: Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now: but thou shalt follow hereafter.
36Simon Peter says to him, Lord, where goest thou? Jesus answered him, Where I go thou canst not follow me now, but thou shalt follow me after.
36Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow afterwards.
37Peter saith to him: Why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee.
37Peter says to him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee.
37Peter saith unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee even now? I will lay down my life for thee.
38Jesus answered him: Wilt thou lay down thy life for me? Amen, amen, I say to thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou deny me thrice.
38Jesus answers, Thou wilt lay down thy life for me! Verily, verily, I say to thee, The cock shall not crow till thou hast denied me thrice.
38Jesus answereth, Wilt thou lay down thy life for me? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
