What John 13:31 means
After Judas leaves, Jesus says, “Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.” The betrayal sets in motion the events through which Jesus’ true glory will shine—the cross, resurrection, and return to the Father. Glory here is not escape from suffering but God’s character revealed through obedient love and sacrifice. The title “Son of man” recalls His mission and authority. God’s honor is bound up with the Son’s work; as Jesus is lifted up, the Father is displayed. The darkest hour becomes the theater of divine glory.

In verse 32, Jesus will expand the mutual glorification between God and Himself and note its nearness. Then, in verse 33, He will address the disciples about His imminent departure, leading into the new commandment (verses 34–35).
