What John 13:32 means

Jesus continues, “and God shall glorify him in himself, and straightway shall he glorify him.” The mutual glorification is reciprocal and imminent. The Father will vindicate and exalt the Son within the sphere of His own being—through resurrection, ascension, and the shared divine glory. “Straightway” underscores the nearness; the hour has arrived. This assurance steadies the disciples: what looks like defeat will reveal the unity and majesty of Father and Son. The plan is not derailed; it is reaching its climax.

Context

This verse completes the theme of glory introduced in verse 31 and prepares for the pastoral turn in verse 33, where Jesus speaks tenderly of His departure and their inability to come with Him now. The glory to come provides the backdrop for the command that will mark them in His absence—the call to love one another as He has loved them (verses 34–35).

v.31When therefore he was gone out, Jesus saith, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him;

v.32This passage

v.33Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say unto you.
