What John 13:30 means
Having received the sop, Judas goes out at once—and John adds, “and it was night.” The note refers to the actual time but also resonates with John’s theme of darkness. Judas steps from the light of Jesus’ presence into the night of betrayal. His swift exit shows his resolve and the inevitability of the hour. The split is now visible: the false disciple departs, and Jesus will speak freely to the true. Darkness advances, yet God’s plan moves forward.

Context
This departure marks the hinge of the chapter. With the betrayer gone, Jesus immediately begins to speak of glory (verses 31–32) and to address His disciples tenderly as “Little children” (verse 33). He will then give them the new commandment to love one another (verses 34–35) and speak to Peter about following later (verses 36–38).
