What John 13:26 means

Jesus answers that it is the one to whom He will give the dipped sop, and then He gives it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. The sign is subtle yet unmistakable to the inquirer. Sharing a morsel at table could be a gesture of friendship or honor, deepening the tragedy: a sign of fellowship marks the betrayer. Jesus remains in control, identifying Judas without a public outcry. He neither panics nor pleads. The act fulfills His earlier word about one who eats His bread turning against Him. Judas receives from Jesus’ hand even as he hardens his heart.

Context

This quiet identification follows the beloved disciple’s question (verse 25) and precedes the decisive moment in verse 27 when Satan enters Judas and Jesus tells him to act quickly. The other disciples, as verses 28–29 indicate, do not grasp the meaning of the exchange, due to the private nature of the sign and Judas’s ordinary role with the moneybag.

v.25He leaning back, as he was, on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?

v.26This passage

v.27And after the sop, then entered Satan into him. Jesus therefore saith unto him, What thou doest, do quickly.
