John 13

1Now before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own that were in the world, he loved them unto the end.

1It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. He had always loved his own people who were in the world, and now he showed them the full extent of his love.

2And during supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,

2The evening meal was in progress. The devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Jesus.

3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came forth from God, and goeth unto God,

3Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over all things, and that he had come from God and was returning to God.

4riseth from supper, and layeth aside his garments; and he took a towel, and girded himself.

4So he got up from the meal, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around his waist.

5Then he poureth water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

5After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel he had wrapped around him.

6So he cometh to Simon Peter. He saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?

6When he came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, 'Lord, are you going to wash my feet?'

7Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt understand hereafter.

7Jesus replied, 'You don't understand now what I am doing, but later you will realize what it means.'

8Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

8'No,' Peter said, 'you will never wash my feet!' Jesus answered, 'If I do not wash you, you have no shared life with me.'

9Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

9Simon Peter replied, 'Then Lord, don't just wash my feet, but my hands and my head as well!'

10Jesus saith to him, He that is bathed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.

10Jesus told him, 'A person who has had a bath only needs to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you disciples are clean, though not every one of you.'

11For he knew him that should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

11For Jesus knew who was going to betray him; that is why he said, 'Not every one of you is clean.'

12So when he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, and sat down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?

12After he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. 'Do you understand what I have done for you?' he asked them.

13Ye call me, Teacher, and, Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

13'You call me "Teacher" and "Lord," and you are right, because that is who I am.

14If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.

14So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash each other’s feet.

15For I have given you an example, that ye also should do as I have done to you.

15I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.

16Verily, verily, I say unto you, A servant is not greater than his lord; neither one that is sent greater than he that sent him.

16I tell you the truth, a servant is not greater than his master, and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him.

17If ye know these things, blessed are ye if ye do them.

17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you actually do them.

18I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth my bread lifted up his heel against me.

18I am not talking about all of you; I know the ones I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: "The one who eats my bread has turned against me."

19From henceforth I tell you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.

19I am telling you this now before it happens, so that when it does happen, you will believe that I am who I say I am.

20Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

20I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.'

21When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in the spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

21After saying this, Jesus was deeply troubled in his spirit and said clearly, 'I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me.'

22The disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.

22His disciples looked at one another, totally confused about which one of them he meant.

23There was at the table reclining in Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

23One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was sitting next to Jesus at the table.

24Simon Peter therefore beckoneth to him, and saith unto him, Tell us who it is of whom he speaketh.

24Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, 'Ask him which one he is talking about.'

25He leaning back, as he was, on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?

25Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, 'Lord, who is it?'

26Jesus therefore answereth, He it is, for whom I shall dip the sop, and give it him. So when he had dipped the sop, he taketh and giveth it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

26Jesus answered, 'It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread after I have dipped it in the bowl.' Then he dipped the piece of bread and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

27And after the sop, then entered Satan into him. Jesus therefore saith unto him, What thou doest, do quickly.

27As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, 'What you are about to do, do it quickly.'

28Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.

28But no one else at the table understood why Jesus said this to him.

29For some thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus said unto him, Buy what things we have need of for the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.

29Since Judas was in charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor.

30He then having received the sop went out straightway: and it was night.

30As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.

31When therefore he was gone out, Jesus saith, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him;

31When Judas was gone, Jesus said, 'Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him.

32and God shall glorify him in himself, and straightway shall he glorify him.

32If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify the Son in himself, and he will do it right away.

33Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say unto you.

33My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jewish leaders, I am telling you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.

34A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; even as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

34I give you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should also love each other.

35By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

35Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.'

36Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow afterwards.

36Simon Peter asked him, 'Lord, where are you going?' Jesus replied, 'Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow me later.'

37Peter saith unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee even now? I will lay down my life for thee.

37Peter asked, 'Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.'

38Jesus answereth, Wilt thou lay down thy life for me? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.

38Jesus answered, 'Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.']}
