What Mark 14:25 means

Jesus vows not to drink again of the fruit of the vine until the day He drinks it new in the kingdom of God. He looks beyond the cross to a future celebration, assuring His disciples that suffering will give way to joy. The word “new” hints at resurrection life and the consummation of God’s reign. This pledge dignifies the Lord’s Supper as both memorial and anticipation. Jesus abstains now because His hour of suffering has come; He will feast later as the victorious King. The promise anchors the disciples’ hope amid the dark night ahead.

Context

After instituting bread and cup, Jesus sets their eyes forward to the kingdom’s fulfillment. This eschatological note balances the imminent sorrow with future joy. The next verse will show them singing a hymn and departing to the Mount of Olives. There, Jesus will predict their stumbling, quote Scripture about the smitten shepherd, and promise a post-resurrection gathering in Galilee. The flow moves from table to journey, from vows to warnings, preparing the disciples for a testing that will scatter them and for a hope that will gather them again.

v.24And he said unto them, This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.

v.25This passage

v.26And when they had sung a hymn, they went out unto the mount of Olives.
