What Mark 14:24 means

Jesus says, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.” He identifies His impending death as sacrificial, establishing a covenant relationship between God and His people. “Poured out” evokes the life given in death; “for many” signals wide, substitutionary benefit. The covenant language recalls God’s promises and the necessity of blood for forgiveness. Jesus places Himself as the mediator whose blood secures what the Law foreshadowed. Context

After the shared drinking, Jesus interprets the cup with covenant language, revealing the heart of His mission. This completes the institution of the Lord’s Supper. The next verse will look forward: Jesus will not drink again until the kingdom of God, pointing to future fulfillment. The meal thus stretches between cross and kingdom—remembrance and hope. After singing a hymn, they will go out to the Mount of Olives, where Jesus will predict their stumbling in fulfillment of Scripture and promise reunion in Galilee after His resurrection.
