John 9

1And as he passed on, he saw a man blind from birth.

2And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this [man] or his parents, that he should be born blind?

2And his disciples put a question to him, saying, Master, was it because of this man's sin, or the sin of his father and mother, that he has been blind from birth?

2And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this man, or his parents, that he should be born blind?

3Jesus answered, Neither has this [man] sinned nor his parents, but that the works ofGod should be manifested in him.

3Jesus said in answer, It was not because of his sin, or because of his father's or mother's; it was so that the works of God might be seen openly in him.

3Jesus answered, Neither did this man sin, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

4I must work the works of him that has sent me while it is day. [The] night is coming, when no one can work.

4While it is day we have to do the works of him who sent me: the night comes when no work may be done.

5As long as I am in the world, I am [the] light of the world.

6Having said these things, he spat on the ground and made mud of the spittle, and put the mud, as ointment, on his eyes.

6Having said these words, he put earth, mixed with water from his mouth, on the man's eyes,

6When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and anointed his eyes with the clay,

7And he said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, which is interpreted, Sent. He went therefore and washed, and came seeing.

7And said to him, Go and make yourself clean in the bath of Siloam (the sense of the name is, Sent). So he went away and, after washing, came back able to see.

7and said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam (which is by interpretation, Sent). He went away therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

8The neighbours therefore, and those who used to see him before, that he was a beggar, said, Is not this he that was sitting and begging?

8Then the neighbours and others who had seen him before in the street, with his hand out for money, said, Is not this the man who got money from people?

8The neighbors therefore, and they that saw him aforetime, that he was a beggar, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?

9Some said, It is he; others said, No, but he is like him: he said, It is I.

9Some said, It is he: others said, No, but he is like him. He said, I am he.

10They said therefore to him, How have thine eyes been opened?

10So they said to him, How then were your eyes made open?

11He answered [and said], A man called Jesus made mud and anointed mine eyes, and said to me, Go to Siloam and wash: and having gone and washed, I saw.

11His answer was: The man who is named Jesus put earth mixed with water on my eyes, and said to me, Go and make yourself clean in Siloam: so I went away and, after washing, am now able to see.

11He answered, The man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to Siloam, and wash: so I went away and washed, and I received sight.

12They said therefore to him, Where is he? He says, I do not know.

12And they said to him, Where is he? His answer was: I have no knowledge.

12And they said unto him, Where is he? He saith, I know not.

13They bring him who was before blind to the Pharisees.

13They took him before the Pharisees--this man who had been blind.

13They bring to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.

14Now it was sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.

14Now the day on which the earth was mixed by Jesus and the man's eyes were made open was the Sabbath.

14Now it was the sabbath on the day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

15The Pharisees therefore also again asked him how he received his sight. And he said to them, He put mud upon mine eyes, and I washed, and I see.

15So the Pharisees put more questions to him about how his eyes had been made open. And he said to them, He put earth on my eyes, and I had a wash and am able to see.

15Again therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he received his sight. And he said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and I see.

16Some of the Pharisees therefore said, This man is not ofGod, for he does not keep the sabbath. Others said, How can a sinful man perform such signs? And there was a division among them.

16Then some of the Pharisees said, That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath. Others said, How is it possible for a sinner to do such signs? So there was a division among them.

16Some therefore of the Pharisees said, This man is not from God, because he keepeth not the sabbath. But others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such signs? And there was a division among them.

17They say therefore again to the blind [man], What dost thou say of him, that he has opened thine eyes? And he said, He is a prophet.

17Again they said to the blind man, What have you to say about him for opening your eyes? And he said, He is a prophet.

17They say therefore unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, in that he opened thine eyes? And he said, He is a prophet.

18The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him that he was blind and had received sight, until they had called the parents of him that had received sight.

18Now the Jews had no belief in the statement that he had been blind and was now able to see, till they sent for the father and mother of the man whose eyes had been made open,

19And they asked them saying, This is your son, of whom ye say that he was born blind: how then does he now see?

19And put the question to them, saying, Is this your son, of whom you say that he was blind at birth? how is it then that he is now able to see?

19and asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?

20His parents answered [them] and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;

20In answer his father and mother said, We are certain that this is our son and that he was blind at birth:

21but how he now sees we do not know, or who has opened his eyes we do not know. He is of age: ask him; he will speak concerning himself.

21But how it is he is now able to see, or who made his eyes open, we are not able to say: put the question to him; he is old enough to give an answer for himself.

21but how he now seeth, we know not; or who opened his eyes, we know not: ask him; he is of age; he shall speak for himself.

22His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if any one confessed him [to be the] Christ, he should be excommunicated from the synagogue.

22They said this because of their fear of the Jews: for the Jews had come to an agreement that if any man said that Jesus was the Christ he would be put out of the Synagogue.

22These things said his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man should confess him to be Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.

23On this account his parents said, He is of age: ask him.

23That was the reason why they said, He is old enough; put the question to him.

23Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.

24They called therefore a second time the man who had been blind, and said to him, Give glory toGod: we know that this man is sinful.

24So they sent a second time for the man who had been blind and they said to him, Give glory to God: it is clear to us that this man is a sinner.

24So they called a second time the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give glory to God: we know that this man is a sinner.

25He answered therefore, If he is sinful I know not. One thing I know, that, being blind [before], now I see.

25He said in answer, I have no knowledge if he is a sinner or not, but one thing I am certain about; I was blind, and now I see.

25He therefore answered, Whether he is a sinner, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

26And they said to him again, What did he do to thee? how opened he thine eyes?

26Then they said to him, What did he do to you? how did he give you the use of your eyes?

26They said therefore unto him, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?

27He answered them, I told you already and ye did not hear: why do ye desire to hear again? do ye also wish to become his disciples?

27His answer was: I have said it before, but your ears were shut: why would you have me say it again? is it your desire to become his disciples?

27He answered them, I told you even now, and ye did not hear; wherefore would ye hear it again? would ye also become his disciples?

28They railed at him, and said, Thou art his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.

28And they were angry with him and said, You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.

28And they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are disciples of Moses.

29We know thatGod spoke to Moses; but [as to] this [man], we know not whence he is.

29We are certain that God gave his word to Moses: but as for this man, we have no knowledge where he comes from.

29We know that God hath spoken unto Moses: but as for this man, we know not whence he is.

30The man answered and said to them, Now in this is a wonderful thing, that ye do not know whence he is, and he has opened mine eyes.

30The man said in answer, Why, here is a strange thing! You have no knowledge where he comes from though he gave me the use of my eyes.

30The man answered and said unto them, Why, herein is the marvel, that ye know not whence he is, and yet he opened mine eyes.

31[But] we know thatGod does not hear sinners; but if any one beGod-fearing and do his will, him he hears.

31We have knowledge that God does not give ear to sinners, but if any man is a worshipper of God and does his pleasure, to him God's ears are open.

31We know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and do his will, him he heareth.

32Since time was, it has not been heard that any one opened the eyes of one born blind.

32In all the years nobody has ever before seen the eyes of a man blind from birth made open.

32Since the world began it was never heard that any one opened the eyes of a man born blind.

33If this [man] were not ofGod he would be able to do nothing.

33If this man did not come from God he would be unable to do anything.

33If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.

34They answered and said to him, Thou hast been wholly born in sins, and thou teachest us? And they cast him out.

34Their answer was: You came to birth through sin; do you make yourself our teacher? And they put him out of the Synagogue.

34They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

35Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him, he said to him, Thou, dost thou believe on the Son ofGod?

35It came to the ears of Jesus that they had put him out, and meeting him he said, Have you faith in the Son of man?

35Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and finding him, he said, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?

36He answered and said, And who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him?

36He said in answer, And who is he, Lord? Say, so that I may have faith in him.

36He answered and said, And who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him?

37And Jesus said to him, Thou hast both seen him, and he that speaks with thee is he.

37Jesus said to him, You have seen him; it is he who is talking to you.

37Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and he it is that speaketh with thee.

38And he said, I believe, Lord: and he did him homage.

38And he said, Lord, I have faith. And he gave him worship.

38And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.

39And Jesus said, For judgment am I come into this world, that they which see not may see, and they which see may become blind.

39And Jesus said, I came into this world to be a judge, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.

39And Jesus said, For judgment came I into this world, that they that see not may see; and that they that see may become blind.

40And [some] of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, Are we blind also?

40These words came to the ears of the Pharisees who were with him and they said to him, Are we, then, blind?

40Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said unto him, Are we also blind?

41Jesus said to them, If ye were blind ye would not have sin; but now ye say, We see, your sin remains.

41Jesus said to them, If you were blind you would have no sin: but now that you say, We see; your sin is there still.

41Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye would have no sin: but now ye say, We see: your sin remaineth.
