1Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, marching in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.
1Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, marching in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.
1Who is this who comes from Edom, with blood-red robes from Bozrah? he whose clothing is fair, stepping with pride in his great strength? I whose glory is in the right, strong for salvation.
1Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bosra, this beautiful one in his robe, walking in the greatness of his strength. I, that speak justice, and am a defender to save.
2Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winevat?
2Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winevat?
2Why is your clothing red, and why are your robes like those of one who is crushing the grapes?
2Why then is thy apparel red, and thy garments like theirs that tread in the winepress?
3I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the peoples there was no man with me: yea, I trod them in mine anger, and trampled them in my wrath; and their lifeblood is sprinkled upon my garments, and I have stained all my raiment.
3I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the peoples there was no man with me: yea, I trod them in mine anger, and trampled them in my wrath; and their lifeblood is sprinkled upon my garments, and I have stained all my raiment.
3I have been crushing the grapes by myself, and of the peoples there was no man with me: in my wrath and in my passion, they were crushed under my feet; and my robes are marked with their life-blood, and all my clothing is red.
3I have trodden the winepress alone, and of the Gentiles there is not a man with me: I have trampled on them in my indignation, and have trodden them down in my wrath, and their blood is sprinkled upon my garments, and I have stained all my apparel.
4For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.
4For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.
4For the day of punishment is in my heart, and the year for the payment of the price for my people has come.
4For the day of vengeance is in my heart, the year of my redemption is come.
5And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my wrath, it upheld me.
5And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my wrath, it upheld me.
5And I saw that there was no helper, and I was wondering that no one gave them support: so my arm did the work of salvation, and my wrath was my support.
5I looked about, and there was none to help: I sought, and there was none to give aid: and my own arm hath saved for me, and my indignation itself hath helped me.
6And I trod down the peoples in mine anger, and made them drunk in my wrath, and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.
6And I trod down the peoples in mine anger, and made them drunk in my wrath, and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.
6And in my passion the peoples were crushed under my feet, and broken in my wrath, and I put down their strength to the earth.
6And I have trodden down the people in my wrath, and have made them drunk in my indignation, and have brought down their strength to the earth.
7I will make mention of the lovingkindnesses of Jehovah, and the praises of Jehovah, according to all that Jehovah hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.
7I will give news of the mercies of the Lord, and his great acts, even all the things the Lord has done for us, in his great grace to the house of Israel; even all he has done for us in his unnumbered mercies.
7I will remember the tender mercies of the Lord, the praise of the Lord for all the things that the Lord hath bestowed upon us, and for the multitude of his good things to the house of Israel, which he hath given them according to his kindness, and according to the multitude of his mercies.
8For he said, Surely, they are my people, children that will not deal falsely: so he was their Saviour.
8For he said, Surely, they are my people, children that will not deal falsely: so he was their Saviour.
8For he said, Truly they are my people, children who will not be false: so he was their saviour out of all their trouble.
8And he said: Surely they are my people, children that will not deny: so he became their saviour.
9In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.
9In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.
9It was no sent one or angel, but he himself who was their saviour: in his love and in his pity he took up their cause, and he took them in his arms, caring for them all through the years.
9In all their affliction he was not troubled, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love, and in his mercy he redeemed them, and he carried them and lifted them up all the days of old.
10But they rebelled, and grieved his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, andhimself fought against them.
10But they rebelled, and grieved his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, andhimself fought against them.
10But they went against him, causing grief to his holy spirit: so he was turned against them, and made war on them.
10But they provoked to wrath, and afflicted the spirit of his Holy One: and he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.
11Then he remembered the days of old, Mosesandhis people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit in the midst of them?
11Then he remembered the days of old, Mosesandhis people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit in the midst of them?
11Then the early days came to their minds, the days of Moses his servant: and they said, Where is he who made the keeper of his flock come up from the sea? where is he who put his holy spirit among them,
11And he remembered the days of old of Moses, and of his people: Where is he that brought them up out of the sea, with the shepherds of his flock? where is he that put in the midst of them the spirit of his Holy One?
12that caused his glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses? that divided the waters before them, to make himself an everlasting name?
12that caused his glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses? that divided the waters before them, to make himself an everlasting name?
12He who made the arm of his glory go at the right hand of Moses, by whom the waters were parted before them, to make himself an eternal name;
12He that brought out Moses by the right hand, by the arm of his majesty: that divided the waters before them, to make himself an everlasting name.
13that led them through the depths, as a horse in the wilderness, so that they stumbled not?
13that led them through the depths, as a horse in the wilderness, so that they stumbled not?
13He who made them go through the deep waters, like a horse in the waste land?
13He that led them out through the deep, as a horse in the wilderness that stumbleth not.
14As the cattle that go down into the valley, the Spirit of Jehovah caused them to rest: so didst thou lead thy people, to make thyself a glorious name.
14As the cattle that go down into the valley, the Spirit of Jehovah caused them to rest: so didst thou lead thy people, to make thyself a glorious name.
14Like the cattle which go down into the valley, they went without falling, the spirit of the Lord guiding them: so you went before your people, to make yourself a great name.
14As a beast that goeth down in the field, the spirit of the Lord was their leader: so didst thou lead thy people to make thyself a glorious name.
15Look down from heaven, and behold from the habitation of thy holiness and of thy glory: where are thy zeal and thy mighty acts? the yearning of thy heart and thy compassions are restrained toward me.
15Look down from heaven, and behold from the habitation of thy holiness and of thy glory: where are thy zeal and thy mighty acts? the yearning of thy heart and thy compassions are restrained toward me.
15Let your eyes be looking down from heaven, from your holy and beautiful house: where is your deep feeling, the working of your power? do not keep back the moving of your pity and your mercies:
15Look down from heaven, and behold from thy holy habitation and the place of thy glory: where is thy zeal, and thy strength, the multitude of thy bowels, and of thy mercies? they have held back themselves from me.
16For thou art our Father, though Abraham knoweth us not, and Israel doth not acknowledge us: thou, O Jehovah, art our Father; our Redeemer from everlasting is thy name.
16For thou art our Father, though Abraham knoweth us not, and Israel doth not acknowledge us: thou, O Jehovah, art our Father; our Redeemer from everlasting is thy name.
16For you are our father, though Abraham has no knowledge of us, and Israel gives no thought to us: you, O Lord, are our father; from the earliest days you have taken up our cause.
16For thou art our father, and Abraham hath not known us, and Israel hath been ignorant of us: thou, O Lord, art our father, our redeemer, from everlasting is thy name.
17O Jehovah, why dost thou make us to err from thy ways, and hardenest our heart from thy fear? Return for thy servants’ sake, the tribes of thine inheritance.
17O Jehovah, why dost thou make us to err from thy ways, and hardenest our heart from thy fear? Return for thy servants’ sake, the tribes of thine inheritance.
17O Lord, why do you send us wandering from your ways, making our hearts hard, so that we have no fear of you? Come back, because of your servants, the tribes of your heritage.
17Why hast thou made us to err, O Lord, from thy ways: why hast thou hardened our heart, that we should not fear thee? return for the sake of thy servants, the tribes of thy inheritance.
18Thy holy people possessed it but a little while: our adversaries have trodden down thy sanctuary.
18Thy holy people possessed it but a little while: our adversaries have trodden down thy sanctuary.
18Why have evil men gone over your holy place, so that it has been crushed under the feet of our haters?
18They have possessed thy holy people as nothing: our enemies have trodden down thy sanctuary.
19We are become as they over whom thou never barest rule, as they that were not called by thy name.
19We are become as they over whom thou never barest rule, as they that were not called by thy name.
19We have become as those who were never ruled by you, on whom your name was not named.
19We are become as in the beginning, when thou didst not rule over us, and when we were not called by thy name.
