מָשִׁיחַ
(mah-SHEE-akh)
noun, masculine
This term refers to someone consecrated or set apart by anointing with oil, most often a king, priest, or prophet.
The Hebrew word מָשִׁיחַ (maschiach) literally means "anointed one." In the ancient Near East, anointing with oil was a common practice to consecrate individuals for specific religious or royal offices. This practice signified divine appointment and empowerment for the task ahead. While the term could refer to priests (Leviticus 4:16) or even prophets, its most prominent usage in the Old Testament is in reference to kings. The king of Israel was considered "the LORD's anointed," highlighting his unique relationship with God and his role as God's chosen representative to rule His people.\ \ Over time, as Israel experienced periods of oppression and exile, the concept of the "anointed one" developed into a messianic hope. The prophets foretold a future, ideal king who would deliver Israel, restore the kingdom, and establish an era of righteousness and peace. This future figure, also known as the Messiah, would fulfill all of God's promises to His people. This expectation set the stage for the New Testament understanding of Jesus as the Christ, which is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew "Messiah."
