Hebrew · Strong's H175

אַהֲרוֹן

(Ah-ha-RONE)

proper noun

Aaron was the first high priest of Israel, the older brother of Moses, and progenitor of the Israelite priesthood.

Aaron, brother of Moses and Miriam, played a significant role in the Exodus narrative and the establishment of Israelite worship. He served as Moses' spokesman before Pharaoh and the Israelites, mitigating Moses' speech impediment. Though initially a supportive figure, Aaron also demonstrated moments of weakness, notably in the golden calf incident at Sinai, underscoring the human frailty even of God-chosen leaders. Nevertheless, his primary and lasting contribution was his appointment by God as the first high priest, an office that became hereditary through his descendants.

The theological weight of Aaron stems from his foundational role in the Levitical priesthood. God ordained Aaron and his sons to mediate between Himself and the Israelite people through ritual sacrifices and offerings. This priestly lineage was crucial for maintaining covenant fidelity and for the expiation of sins within the Old Covenant. The office of the high priest, stemming from Aaron, thus prefigured Christ's ultimate high priestly work, who, unlike Aaron, offered a perfect and final sacrifice.

Throughout the Pentateuch, Aaron is central to the establishment of the sanctuary, the laws concerning clean and unclean animals, and the Day of Atonement rituals. His calling as high priest signified God's provision for a structured worship system and a way for a holy God to dwell among a sinful people. The enduring legacy of an "Aaronic priesthood" continued through generations, shaping the spiritual life of Israel until the coming of the New Covenant.
