ἀκολουθέω

akolouthéō (ah-ko-loo-THEH-oh)

verb

To follow physically, often with the metaphorical sense of becoming a disciple and aligning one’s life with another.

The Greek verb ἀκολουθέω primarily means to follow, accompany, or go along with. Its semantic range extends from simple physical movement behind another person or group to a deeper commitment of discipleship. In its most basic sense, it refers to the act of moving in the same direction as someone else, as seen when crowds followed Jesus (Mark 3:7, Luke 9:8). This physical accompaniment, however, often carries implicit connotations of association or allegiance, particularly in the context of a teacher and his students.

The theological weight of ἀκολουθέω is most pronounced in the Gospels, where it frequently describes the act of becoming a disciple of Jesus. To "follow" Jesus implies not only a change in physical location but a radical reorientation of one's life, priorities, and values. It signifies a willingness to learn from him, obey his teachings, and share in his mission, even at great personal cost (Mark 10:21). This kind of following demands a deliberate choice and often involves leaving behind previous ways of life or attachments.

Beyond simple physical movement or becoming a formal disciple, ἀκολουθέω can also denote adherence to a leader or a cause. For example, Peter followed Jesus "afar off" (Matthew 26:58), indicating a degree of caution or reluctance even while maintaining some connection. The term can also be used in symbolic or eschatological contexts, as in Revelation 6:8, where Hell "followed" Death, illustrating an inseparable connection. The breadth of its usage across the New Testament highlights that "following" can range from casual observation to total life commitment, with the context always determining the precise nuance.
