ἰδού

idoú (ee-DOO)

particle

A particle of command or exclamation used to draw attention to what is being said or to what is about to happen.

Slightly over half of the occurrences of ἰδού appear in the Gospels, particularly in Matthew and Luke. It serves to introduce something new and significant that the speaker wants the hearer or reader to notice. For example, it can mark the beginning of a new section or highlight an important event or statement. It often translates as "behold," "look," or "lo," emphasizing the immediate attention required by the following information. Its use does not typically carry deep theological weight beyond signaling the importance of the accompanying statement. In the Septuagint, ἰδού frequently translates the Hebrew particle הִנֵּה (hinneh), which functions similarly to draw attention to a surprising or significant event or to underscore an imminent action. This connection demonstrates a consistent usage across the Old and New Testaments in bringing emphasis to a declaration or observation. In prophetic or eschatological contexts, especially in Revelation, ἰδού can introduce a vision or a significant future event, urging the reader to consider its implications. For instance, John frequently uses it to introduce components of his visions, such as "behold, a white horse" (Revelation 6:2). In narrative sections, it often signals a dramatic turn of events or the arrival of a key character, thereby increasing the narrative tension or focus.
