Matthew 11:28-30

Matthew 11:28-30 — Come to Me, All Who Are Weary

Three verses Jesus addressed to the tired — a yoke that is easy, a burden that is light, and rest for the soul.

restdiscipleshiphumilityburden

28Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Historical context

Matthew 11 records a turning point in Jesus' ministry. John the Baptist has sent doubting messengers from prison; the towns where Jesus did most of his miracles have refused to repent (vv.20-24). Yet in the same breath he praises the Father for hiding these things from 'the wise and prudent' and revealing them to 'babes.' Then comes one of the warmest invitations in all of scripture, addressed not to the strong but to the weary.

Commentary

'Come to me' — Jesus does not point to a system or even to a teaching, but to himself. The invitation is personal. The audience is broad: 'all you who labor and are heavily burdened.' First-century Jewish hearers carried the weight of Pharisaic regulations layered on Torah; modern hearers carry their own loads. Jesus addresses both.

The promise is rest — anapausis — the same word used in the Greek Old Testament for the Sabbath rest of God's people in the land. It is not idleness but settled relief.

'Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me.' Rest is offered, but discipleship is required. A rabbi's 'yoke' was his interpretation of the law and his pattern of life. Jesus' yoke is binding, but it is also fitted — 'easy' (Greek chrēstos, well-fitting, kind) and 'light.'

The reason given is not the difficulty of the load but the character of the teacher: 'for I am gentle and lowly in heart.' Rest for the soul flows from union with a humble Christ, not from clever life-management.
