What Romans 6:7 means
Paul appeals to a general principle: death ends obligations and claims. If a person has died, he is released—“justified”—from sin’s claim to punish and dominate. Applied to the believer’s union with Christ, this means that sin’s right to condemn and enslave has been canceled. The term “justified” reminds us that liberation is legal as well as moral; God has declared the believer righteous in Christ, and this verdict frees from sin’s demands as master. The cross is the courtroom where the sentence against our old life was carried out. Having died with Christ, believers are no longer under sin’s jurisdiction. Therefore, a life of ongoing bondage would contradict the verdict of grace.

Context
This verse bolsters verse 6’s claim about the end of sin’s mastery by invoking a recognized truth about death’s finality. It paves the way for verses 8–10, which shift focus from death to life—our confident expectation of living with Christ and the permanence of his resurrection. Then verse 11 will draw a conclusion: believers must reckon themselves in line with these realities, leading to practical exhortations about resisting sin and presenting ourselves to God (verses 12–13).
