What Mark 15:20 means

After their mocking, the soldiers strip Jesus of the purple and restore his own clothes before leading him away to be crucified. The temporary garb underscores the mockery’s theatrical nature; the soldiers perform and then return to the grim business of execution. This movement emphasizes the transition from ridicule within the Praetorium to the public humiliation of the cross. It also preserves Jesus’ identity: he leaves in his garments, the image of his actual mission intact as he proceeds to Golgotha.

Context

This comes after the soldiers’ mockery and physical abuse. They conclude their farce and prepare for the crucifixion procession. The return to his garments and the movement toward the cross lead to the imposition of the cross upon Simon of Cyrene and the journey to Golgotha, where Jesus will be crucified.

v.19And they smote his head with a reed, and spat upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.

v.20This passage

v.21And they compel one passing by, Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to go with them, that he might bear his cross.
