What John 19:16 means
Succumbing entirely to the relentless pressure and political threats from the Jewish leaders, Pilate finally delivers Jesus to them to be crucified. This act marks the tragic culmination of Pilate's moral compromise and failure to uphold justice. Despite repeatedly declaring Jesus innocent, his fear of Caesar and a potential uprising outweighed his conscience. Jesus is now condemned to the most brutal form of Roman execution, a fate He willingly accepts for the redemption of humanity.

Context
This verse describes the definitive moment of Pilate's surrender, following the Jewish leaders' chilling declaration of "no king but Caesar." This handing over of Jesus is the direct consequence of the escalating demands and threats against Pilate. It immediately leads into Jesus' journey to Golgotha, initiating the physical acts of crucifixion and fulfilling the divine plan foreseen by the prophets.
v.15They therefore cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him! Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cæsar.
v.16This passage
v.17They took Jesus therefore: and he went out, bearing the cross for himself, unto the place called The place of a skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha:
