Mark 14

1Now after two days wasthe feast ofthe passover and the unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him with subtlety, and kill him:

1It was now two days before the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for a sneaky way to arrest Jesus and kill him.

2for they said, Not during the feast, lest haply there shall be a tumult of the people.

2They said, 'We shouldn't do it during the festival, or the people might start a riot.'

3And while he was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster cruse of ointment of pure nard very costly; and she brake the cruse, and poured it over his head.

3While Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon the leper, a woman came in as he was eating. She had an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume over his head.

4But there were some that had indignation among themselves, saying, To what purpose hath this waste of the ointment been made?

4Some of those who were there were angry and said to each other, 'Why was this perfume wasted?'

5For this ointment might have been sold for above three hundred shillings, and given to the poor. And they murmured against her.

5'It could have been sold for more than three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor.' And they criticized her harshly.

6But Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.

6But Jesus said, 'Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing for me.'

7For ye have the poor always with you, and whensoever ye will ye can do them good: but me ye have not always.

7'You will always have the poor with you, and you can help them whenever you want. But you will not always have me.'

8She hath done what she could; she hath anointed my body beforehand for the burying.

8'She did what she could; she poured perfume on my body ahead of time to prepare me for burial.'

9And verily I say unto you, Wheresoever the gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, that also which this woman hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

9'I tell you the truth, wherever the good news is preached throughout the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.'

10And Judas Iscariot, he that was one of the twelve, went away unto the chief priests, that he might deliver him unto them.

10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the chief priests to hand Jesus over to them.

11And they, when they heard it, were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently deliver him unto them.

11They were glad to hear this and promised to give him money. So he started looking for a good chance to betray him.

12And on the first day of unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the passover, his disciples say unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and make ready that thou mayest eat the passover?

12On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was time to sacrifice the Passover lamb, his disciples asked him, 'Where do you want us to go and get things ready for you to eat the Passover dinner?'

13And he sendeth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him;

13He sent two of his disciples and told them, 'Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him.'

14and wheresoever he shall enter in, say to the master of the house, The Teacher saith, Where is my guest-chamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?

14'Wherever he goes in, say to the owner of the house, "The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I can eat the Passover with my disciples?"'

15And he will himself show you a large upper room furnished and ready: and there make ready for us.

15'He will show you a large upstairs room that is furnished and ready. Get everything ready for us there.'

16And the disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.

16The disciples left, went into the city, and found everything just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.

17And when it was evening he cometh with the twelve.

17When evening came, Jesus arrived with the twelve disciples.

18And as they sat and were eating, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you shall betray me, even he that eateth with me.

18While they were at the table eating, Jesus said, 'I tell you the truth, one of you eating with me right now will betray me.'

19They began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I?

19They were very sad and began to ask him one after another, 'I'm not the one, am I?'

20And he said unto them, It is one of the twelve, he that dippeth with me in the dish.

20He replied, 'It is one of the twelve, the one who dips bread into the bowl with me.'

21For the Son of man goeth, even as it is written of him: but woe unto that man through whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had not been born.

21'The Son of Man will go just as the Scriptures say about him. But how terrible it will be for that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for that man if he had never been born.'

22And as they were eating, he took bread, and when he had blessed, he brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take ye: this is my body.

22While they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it, and broke it. He gave it to them and said, 'Take it; this is my body.'

23And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave to them: and they all drank of it.

23Then he took a cup of wine, gave thanks, and passed it to them, and they all drank from it.

24And he said unto them, This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.

24He said to them, 'This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many people.'

25Verily I say unto you, I shall no more drink of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

25'I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.'

26And when they had sung a hymn, they went out unto the mount of Olives.

27And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered abroad.

27Jesus said to them, 'All of you will desert me, for it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.'

28Howbeit, after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee.

28'But after I have been raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.'

29But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.

29Peter said to him, 'Even if everyone else deserts you, I will not.'

30And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, that thou to-day, even this night, before the cock crow twice, shalt deny me thrice.

30Jesus answered, 'I tell you the truth, today—this very night—before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.'

31But he spake exceeding vehemently, If I must die with thee, I will not deny thee. And in like manner also said they all.

31But Peter insisted even more strongly, 'Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!' And all the other disciples said the same thing.

32And they come unto a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith unto his disciples, Sit ye here, while I pray.

32They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, 'Sit here while I pray.'

33And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly amazed, and sore troubled.

33He took Peter, James, and John along with him, and he began to feel deep distress and great trouble.

34And he saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful even unto death: abide ye here, and watch.

34He said to them, 'My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch.'

35And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him.

35Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that, if possible, the hour of suffering might pass from him.

36And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; remove this cup from me: howbeit not what I will, but what thou wilt.

36'Abba, Father,' he said, 'everything is possible for you. Take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.'

37And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest thou not watch one hour?

37Then he returned and found them sleeping. 'Simon,' he said to Peter, 'are you asleep? Couldn't you keep watch for one hour?'

38Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

38'Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.'

39And again he went away, and prayed, saying the same words.

39Once more he went away and prayed, saying the same thing.

40And again he came, and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they knew not what to answer him.

40When he came back, he again found them sleeping because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

41And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough; the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

41Returning the third time, he said to them, 'Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.'

42Arise, let us be going: behold, he that betrayeth me is at hand.

42'Get up! Let's go! Here comes the man who is betraying me.'

43And straightway, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

43Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, appeared. A crowd armed with swords and clubs was with him, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44Now he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he; take him, and lead him away safely.

44The betrayer had given them a signal: 'The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.'

45And when he was come, straightway he came to him, and saith, Rabbi; and kissed him.

45Going straight to Jesus, Judas said, 'Teacher!' and kissed him.

46And they laid hands on him, and took him.

46The men grabbed Jesus and arrested him.

47But a certain one of them that stood by drew his sword, and smote the servant of the high priest, and struck off his ear.

47Then one of those standing nearby drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a robber, with swords and staves to seize me?

48'Am I leading a rebellion,' Jesus asked, 'that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me?'

49I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but this is done that the scriptures might be fulfilled.

49'Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you didn't arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.'

50And they all left him, and fled.

50Then everyone deserted him and fled.

51And a certain young man followed with him, having a linen cloth cast about him, over his naked body: and they lay hold on him;

51A young man, wearing nothing but a linen cloth, was following Jesus. When they tried to grab him,

52but he left the linen cloth, and fled naked.

52he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked.

53And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and there come together with him all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.

53They led Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders, and the teachers of the law gathered together.

54And Peter had followed him afar off, even within, into the court of the high priest; and he was sitting with the officers, and warming himself in the light of the fire.

54Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself by the fire.

55Now the chief priests and the whole council sought witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found it not.

55The chief priests and the whole high council were looking for evidence against Jesus so they could put him to death, but they couldn't find any.

56For many bare false witness against him, and their witness agreed not together.

56Many people told lies about him, but their stories did not agree.

57And there stood up certain, and bare false witness against him, saying,

57Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him:

58We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.

58'We heard him say, "I will destroy this temple made by human hands and in three days will build another, not made by hands."'

59And not even so did their witness agree together.

59Yet even then their stories did not agree.

60And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?

60Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, 'Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony these men are bringing against you?'

61But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and saith unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?

61But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, 'Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?'

62And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.

62'I am,' said Jesus. 'And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.'

63And the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What further need have we of witnesses?

63The high priest tore his clothes and said, 'Why do we need any more witnesses?'

64Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be worthy of death.

64'You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?' They all judged him guilty and said he deserved to die.

65And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the officers received him with blows of their hands.

65Then some began to spit on him; they blindfolded him, hit him with their fists, and said, 'Prophesy!' And the guards took him and beat him.

66And as Peter was beneath in the court, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest;

66While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by.

67and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and saith, Thou also wast with the Nazarene, even Jesus.

67When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him and said, 'You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus.'

68But he denied, saying, I neither know, nor understand what thou sayest: and he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.

68But he denied it. 'I don't know or understand what you're talking about,' he said, and went out into the entryway. Then a rooster crowed.

69And the maid saw him, and began again to say to them that stood by, This is one of them.

69When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, 'This fellow is one of them.'

70But he again denied it. And after a little while again they that stood by said to Peter, Of a truth thou art one of them; for thou art a Galilæan.

70Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, 'Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.'

71But he began to curse, and to swear, I know not this man of whom ye speak.

71He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, 'I don't know this man you're talking about!'

72And straightway the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word, how that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.

72Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: 'Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.' And he broke down and wept.
