1And when they draw nigh unto Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth two of his disciples,

1As they approached Jerusalem and came to the towns of Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples on ahead.

2and saith unto them, Go your way into the village that is over against you: and straightway as ye enter into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon no man ever yet sat; loose him, and bring him.

2He told them, 'Go into the village ahead of you. As soon as you enter, you will find a young donkey tied there that no one has ever sat on. Untie it and bring it here.'

3And if any one say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye, The Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him back hither.

3'If anyone asks you, "Why are you doing this?" just say, "The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly."'

4And they went away, and found a colt tied at the door without in the open street; and they loose him.

4So they went and found a young donkey outside in the street, tied at a doorway, and they untied it.

5And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt?

5Some people standing there asked them, 'What are you doing, untying that donkey?'

6And they said unto them even as Jesus had said: and they let them go.

6They answered just as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go.

7And they bring the colt unto Jesus, and cast on him their garments; and he sat upon him.

7They brought the donkey to Jesus, threw their coats over it, and he sat on it.

8And many spread their garments upon the way; and others branches, which they had cut from the fields.

8Many people spread their coats on the road, while others spread leafy branches they had cut in the fields.

9And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:

9The people walking in front and those following behind shouted, 'Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!'

10Blessed is the kingdom that cometh, the kingdom of our father David: Hosanna in the highest.

10'Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!'

11And he entered into Jerusalem, into the temple; and when he had looked round about upon all things, it being now eventide, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve.

11Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. After looking around at everything, he left for Bethany with the twelve disciples because it was already late.

12And on the morrow, when they were come out from Bethany, he hungered.

12The next day, as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry.

13And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find anything thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for it was not the season of figs.

13He saw a fig tree with leaves in the distance and went to see if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not yet the season for figs.

14And he answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit from thee henceforward for ever. And his disciples heard it.

14Jesus said to the tree, 'May no one ever eat fruit from you again!' And his disciples heard him say it.

15And they come to Jerusalem: and he entered into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and them that bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money-changers, and the seats of them that sold the doves;

15When they reached Jerusalem, Jesus went into the temple area and began chasing out those who were buying and selling there. He knocked over the tables of the money-changers and the benches of those selling doves.

16and he would not suffer that any man should carry a vessel through the temple.

16He would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courtyards.

17And he taught, and said unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations? but ye have made it a den of robbers.

17Then he taught them, 'Is it not written in the Scriptures, "My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations"? But you have turned it into a hideout for bandits!'

18And the chief priests and the scribes heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, for all the multitude was astonished at his teaching.

18The leading priests and the teachers of religious law heard about this and began looking for a way to kill him. They were afraid of him because the whole crowd was amazed by his teaching.

19And every evening he went forth out of the city.

19When evening came, Jesus and his disciples left the city.

20And as they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away from the roots.

20In the morning, as they walked along, they saw that the fig tree had withered all the way down to its roots.

21And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Rabbi, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away.

21Peter remembered and said to Jesus, 'Teacher, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered away.'

22And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.

22Jesus answered them, 'Have faith in God.'

23Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou taken up and cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that what he saith cometh to pass; he shall have it.

23'I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, "Be lifted up and thrown into the sea," and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.'

24Therefore I say unto you, All things whatsoever ye pray and ask for, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

24'Therefore I tell you, whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.'

25And whensoever ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have aught against any one; that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

25'Whenever you stand praying, if you hold a grudge against anyone, forgive them. Do this so that your Father in heaven may also forgive your sins.'

26

26[Some manuscripts include verse 26: But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your sins.]

27And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders;

27They returned to Jerusalem. While Jesus was walking in the temple, the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders came to him.

28and they said unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? or who gave thee this authority to do these things?

28They asked him, 'By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you the right to do them?'

29And Jesus said unto them, I will ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

29Jesus said to them, 'I will ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I do these things.'

30The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men? answer me.

30'Did John’s authority to baptize come from heaven or was it merely human? Answer me.'

31And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?

31They talked it over among themselves, saying, 'If we say, "From heaven," he will ask, "Then why didn't you believe him?"'

32But should we say, From men—they feared the people: for all verily held John to be a prophet.

32'But if we say, "From humans"—' They were afraid of the people, because everyone believed that John was truly a prophet.

33And they answered Jesus and say, We know not. And Jesus saith unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

33So they answered Jesus, 'We don't know.' Jesus replied, 'Then I won't tell you by what authority I do these things either.'
