What Mark 11:28 means

The religious leaders directly questioned Jesus's authority, asking, "By what authority doest thou these things? or who gave thee this authority to do these things?" They sought to discredit Him by demanding the source of His power, whether divine or human. This challenge was an attempt to trap Him, either by forcing Him to claim divine authority, which they would deem blasphemy, or by revealing a human mandate they could easily dismiss.

Context

This verse records the direct challenge from the religious leaders to Jesus, immediately following their confrontation with Him in the temple (verse 27). This question about His authority is a crucial turning point, setting up Jesus's counter-question and the subsequent evasiveness of the leaders, revealing their underlying fear and lack of genuine spiritual inquiry.

v.27And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders;

v.28This passage

v.29And Jesus said unto them, I will ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
