1And he got up, and went into the country of Judaea on the other side of Jordan: and great numbers of people came together to him again; and, as was his way, he gave them teaching.
1And rising up from thence, he cometh into the coast of Judea beyond the Jordan: and the multitude flocked to him again. And as he was accustomed, he taught them again.
2And Pharisees came to him, testing him with the question, Is it right for a man to put away his wife?
2And the Pharisees coming to him asked him, tempting him: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife?
3And he said to them in answer, What did Moses say you were to do?
3But he answering, saith to them: What did Moses command you?
4And they said to him, Moses let us give her a statement in writing, and be free from her.
4Who said: Moses permitted to write a bill of divorce and to put her away.
5But Jesus said to them, Because of your hard hearts he gave you this law.
5To whom Jesus answering, said: Because of the hardness of your heart, he wrote you that precept.
6But from the first, male and female made he them.
6But from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female.
7For this cause will a man go away from his father and mother, and be joined to his wife;
7For this cause, a man shall leave his father and mother and shall cleave to his wife.
8And the two will become one flesh; so that they are no longer two, but one flesh.
8And they two shall be in one flesh. Therefore now they are not two, but one flesh.
9Let not that which has been joined together by God be parted by man.
9What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder.
10And in the house the disciples put questions to him again about this thing.
10And in the house again his disciples asked him concerning the same thing.
11And he said to them, Whoever puts away his wife and takes another, is false to his wife;
11And he saith to them: Whosoever shall put away his wife and marry another committeth adultery against her.
12And if she herself puts away her husband and takes another, she is false to her husband.
12And if the wife shall put away her husband and be married to another, she committeth adultery.
13And they took to him little children, so that he might put his hands on them: and the disciples said sharp words to them.
13And they brought to him young children, that he might touch them. And the disciples rebuked them that brought them.
14And when Jesus saw it, he was angry, and said to them, Let the little children come to me, and do not keep them away; for of such is the kingdom of God.
14Whom when Jesus saw, he was much displeased and saith to them: Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
15Truly I say to you, Whoever does not put himself under the kingdom of God like a little child, will not come into it at all.
15Amen I say to you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall not enter into it.
16And he took them in his arms, and gave them a blessing, putting his hands on them.
16And embracing them and laying his hands upon them, he blessed them.
17And while he was going out into the way, a man came running to him, and went down on his knees, saying, Good Master, what have I to do so that I may have eternal life?
17And when he was gone forth into the way, a certain man, running up and kneeling before him, asked him: Good Master, what shall I do that I may receive life everlasting?
18And Jesus said to him, Why do you say I am good? no one is good but one, and that is God.
18And Jesus said to him: Why callest thou me good? None is good but one, that is God.
19You have knowledge of what is said in the law, Do not put any one to death, Do not be untrue in married life, Do not take what is not yours, Do not give false witness, Do not get money by deceit, Give honour to your father and mother.
19Thou knowest the commandments: Do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal, bear not false witness, do no fraud, honour thy father and mother.
20And he said to him, Master, all these laws I have kept from the time when I was young.
20But he answering, said to him: Master, all these things I have observed from my youth.
21And Jesus, looking on him and loving him, said, There is one thing needed: go, get money for your goods, and give it to the poor, and you will have wealth in heaven: and come with me.
21And Jesus, looking on him, loved him and said to him: One thing is wanting unto thee. Go, sell whatsoever thou hast and give to the poor: and thou shalt have treasure in heaven. And come, follow me.
22But his face became sad at the saying, and he went away sorrowing: for he was one who had much property.
22Who being struck sad at that saying, went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
23And Jesus, looking round about, said to his disciples, How hard it is for those who have wealth to come into the kingdom of God!
23And Jesus looking round about, saith to his disciples: How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
24And the disciples were full of wonder at his words. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how hard it is for those who put faith in wealth to come into the kingdom of God!
24And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus again answering, saith to them: Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God?
25It is simpler for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a man of wealth to come into the kingdom of God.
25It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
26And they were greatly surprised, saying to him, Who then may have salvation?
26Who wondered the more, saying among themselves: Who then can be saved?
27Jesus, looking on them, said, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for all things are possible with God.
27And Jesus looking on them, saith with men it is impossible; but not with God. For all things are possible with God.
28Peter said to him, See, we have given up everything, and come after you.
28And Peter began to say unto him: Behold, we have left all things and have followed thee.
29Jesus said, Truly I say to you, There is no man who has given up house, or brothers, or sisters, or mother, or father, or children, or land, because of me and the good news,
29Jesus answering said: Amen I say to you, there is no man who hath left house or brethren or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel,
30Who will not get a hundred times as much now in this time, houses, and brothers, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and land--though with great troubles; and, in the world to come, eternal life.
30Who shall not receive an hundred times as much, now in this time: houses and brethren and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions: and in the world to come life everlasting.
31But a great number who are first will be last: and those who are last will be first.
31But many that are first shall be last: and the last, first.
32And they were on the way, going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus was going before them: and they were full of wonder; but those who came after him were in fear. And again he took the twelve, and gave them word of the things which were to come on him,
32And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem: and Jesus went before them. And they were astonished and following were afraid. And taking again the twelve, he began to tell them the things that should befall him.
33Saying, See, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be given up to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will give an order for his death, and will give him up to the Gentiles:
33Saying: Behold we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shall be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes and ancients. And they shall condemn him to death and shall deliver him to the Gentiles.
34And they will make sport of him, and put shame on him, and give him cruel blows, and will put him to death; and after three days he will come back from the dead.
34And they shall mock him and spit on him and scourge him and kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.
35And there came to him James and John, the sons of Zebedee, saying to him, Master, will you give us whatever may be our request?
35And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come to him, saying: Master, we desire that whatsoever we shall ask, thou wouldst do it for us.
36And he said to them, What would you have me do for you?
36But he said to them: What would you that I should do for you?
37And they said to him, Let us be seated, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.
37And they said: Grant to us that we may sit, one on thy right hand and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.
38But Jesus said to them, You have no knowledge of what you are saying. Are you able to take of my cup? or to undergo the baptism which I am to undergo?
38And Jesus said to them: You know not what you ask. Can you drink of the chalice that I drink of or be baptized with the baptism wherewith I am baptized?
39And they said to him, We are able. And Jesus said to them, You will take of the cup from which I take; and the baptism which I am about to undergo you will undergo:
39But they said to him: We can. And Jesus saith to them: You shall indeed drink of the chalice that I drink of; and with the baptism wherewith I am baptized you shall be baptized.
40But to be seated at my right hand or at my left is not for me to give: but it is for those for whom it has been made ready.
40But to sit on my right hand or on my left is not mine to give to you, but to them for whom it is prepared.
41And hearing this, the ten became very angry with James and John.
41And the ten, hearing it, began to be much displeased at James and John.
42And Jesus made them come to him, and said to them, You see that those who are made rulers over the Gentiles are lords over them, and their great ones have authority over them.
42But Jesus calling them, saith to them: You know that they who seem to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them: and their princes have power over them.
43But it is not so among you: but whoever has a desire to become great among you, let him be your servant:
43But it is not so among you: but whosoever will be greater shall be your minister.
44And whoever has a desire to be first among you, let him be servant of all.
44And whosoever will be first among you shall be the servant of all.
45For truly the Son of man did not come to have servants, but to be a servant, and to give his life for the salvation of men.
45For the Son of man also is not come to be ministered unto: but to minister and to give his life a redemption for many.
46And they came to Jericho: and when he was going out of Jericho, with his disciples and a great number of people, the son of Timaeus, Bartimaeus, a blind man, was seated by the wayside, with his hand out for money.
46And they came to Jericho. And as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a very great multitude, Bartimeus the blind man, the son of Timeus, sat by the way side begging.
47And when it came to his ears that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he gave a cry, and said, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.
47Who when he had heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, began to cry out and to say: Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.
48And some of them, turning in protest, gave him an order to be quiet: but he went on crying out all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me.
48And many rebuked him, that he might hold his peace; but he cried a great deal the more: Son of David, have mercy on me.
49And Jesus came to a stop and said, Let him come. And crying out to the blind man, they said to him, Be comforted: come, he has sent for you.
49And Jesus, standing still, commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying to him: Be of better comfort. Arise, he calleth thee.
50And he, putting off his coat, got up quickly, and came to Jesus.
50Who casting off his garment leaped up and came to him.
