1And having called together the twelve, he gave them power and authority over all demons, and to heal diseases,
1Then calling together the twelve apostles, he gave them power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases.
2and sent them to proclaim the kingdom ofGod and to heal the sick.
2And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
3And he said to them, Take nothing for the way, neither staff, nor scrip, nor bread, nor money; nor to have two body-coats apiece.
3And he said to them: Take nothing for your journey, neither staff, nor scrip, nor bread, nor money; neither have two coats.
4And into whatsoever house ye enter, there abide and thence go forth.
4And whatsoever house you shall enter into, abide there and depart not from thence.
5And as many as may not receive you, going forth from that city, shake off even the dust from your feet for a witness against them.
5And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off even the dust of your feet, for a testimony against them.
6And going forth they passed through the villages, announcing the glad tidings and healing everywhere.
6And going out, they went about through the towns, preaching the gospel and healing every where.
7And Herod the tetrarch heard of all the things which were done [by him], and was in perplexity, because it was said by some that John was risen from among [the] dead,
7Now Herod, the tetrarch, heard of all things that were done by him. And he was in a doubt, because it was said
8and by some that Elias had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again.
8By some that John was risen from the dead: but by other some, that Elias had appeared: and by others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.
9And Herod said, John I have beheaded, but who is this of whom I hear such things? and he sought to see him.
9And Herod said: John I have beheaded. But who is this of whom I hear such things? And he sought to see him.
10And the apostles having returned related to him whatever they had done. And he took them and withdrew apart into [a desert place of] a city called Bethsaida.
10And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all they had done. And taking them, he went aside into a desert place, apart, which belongeth to Bethsaida.
11But the crowds knowing [it] followed him; and he received them and spake to them of the kingdom ofGod, and cured those that had need of healing.
11Which when the people knew, they followed him: and he received them and spoke to them of the kingdom of God and healed them who had need of healing.
12But the day began to decline, and the twelve came and said to him, Send away the crowd that they may go into the villages around, and [into] the fields, and lodge and find victuals, for here we are in a desert place.
12Now the day began to decline. And the twelve came and said to him: Send away the multitude, that, going into the towns and villages round about, they may lodge and get victuals; for we are here in a desert place.
13And he said to them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have not more than five loaves and two fishes, unless we should go and buy food for all this people;
13But he said to them: Give you them to eat. And they said: We have no more than five loaves and two fishes; unless perhaps, we should go and buy food for all this multitude.
14for they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down in companies by fifties.
14Now there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples: Make them sit down by fifties in a company.
16And taking the five loaves and the two fishes, looking up to heaven he blessed them, and broke and gave to the disciples to set before the crowd.
16And taking the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven and blessed them: and he broke and distributed to his disciples, to set before the multitude.
17And they all ate and were filled; and there was taken up of what had remained over and above to them in fragments twelve hand-baskets.
17And they did all eat and were filled. And there were taken up of fragments that remained to them, twelve baskets.
18And it came to pass as he was praying alone, his disciples were with him, and he asked them saying, Who do the crowds say that I am?
18And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples also were with him: and he asked them, saying: Whom do the people say that I am?
19But they answering said, John the baptist; but others, Elias; and others, that one of the old prophets has risen again.
19But they answered and said: John the Baptist; but some say Elias: and others say that one of the former prophets is risen again.
20And he said to them, But ye, who do ye say that I am? And Peter answering said, The Christ ofGod.
20And he said to them: But whom do you say that I am? Simon Peter answering, said: The Christ of God.
21But, earnestly charging them, he enjoined [them] to say this to no man,
21But he strictly charging them, commanded they should tell this to no man.
22saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.
22Saying: The Son of man must suffer many things and be rejected by the ancients and chief priests and scribes and be killed and the third day rise again.
23And he said to [them] all, If any one will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me;
23And he said to all: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
24for whosoever shall desire to save his life shall lose it, but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake, he shall save it.
24For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: for he that shall lose his life for my sake shall save it.
25For what shall a man profit if he shall have gained the whole world, and have destroyed, or come under the penalty of the loss of himself?
25For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world and lose himself and cast away himself?
26For whosoever shall have been ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of man be ashamed when he shall come in his glory, and [in that] of the Father, and of the holy angels.
26For he that shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him the Son of man shall be ashamed, when he shall come in his majesty and that of his Father and of the holy angels.
27But I say unto you of a truth, There are some of those standing here who shall not taste death until they shall have seen the kingdom ofGod.
27But I tell you of a truth: There are some standing here that shall not taste death till they see the kingdom of God.
28And it came to pass after these words, about eight days, that taking Peter and John and James he went up into a mountain to pray.
28And it came to pass, about eight days after these words, that he took Peter and James and John and went up into a mountain to pray.
29And as he prayed the fashion of his countenance became different and his raiment white [and] effulgent.
29And whilst he prayed, the shape of his countenance was altered and his raiment became white and glittering.
30And lo, two men talked with him, who were Moses and Elias,
30And behold two men were talking with him. And they were Moses and Elias,
31who, appearing in glory, spoke of his departure which he was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.
31Appearing in majesty. And they spoke of his decease that he should accomplish in Jerusalem.
32But Peter and those with him were oppressed with sleep: but having fully awoke up they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him.
32But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep. And waking, they saw his glory and the two men that stood with him.
33And it came to pass as they departed from him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
33And it came to pass that, as they were departing from him, Peter saith to Jesus: Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses; and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
34But as he was saying these things, there came a cloud and overshadowed them, and they feared as they entered into the cloud:
34And as he spoke these things, there came a cloud and overshadowed them. And they were afraid when they entered into the cloud.
35and there was a voice out of the cloud saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
35And a voice came out of the cloud; saying: This is my beloved son. Hear him.
36And as the voice was [heard] Jesus was found alone: and they kept silence, and told no one in those days any of the things they had seen.
36And whilst the voice was uttered Jesus was found alone. And they held their peace and told no man in those days any of these things which they had seen.
37And it came to pass on the following day, when they came down from the mountain, a great crowd met him.
37And it came to pass the day following, when they came down from the mountain, there met him a great multitude.
38And lo, a man from the crowd cried out saying, Teacher, I beseech thee look upon my son, for he is mine only child:
38And behold a man among the crowd cried out, saying: Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son, because he is my only one.
39and behold, a spirit takes him, and suddenly he cries out, and it tears him with foaming, and with difficulty departs from him after crushing him.
39And lo, a spirit seizeth him, and he suddenly crieth out, and he throweth him down and teareth him, so that he foameth; and bruising him, he hardly departeth from him.
40And I besought thy disciples that they might cast him out, and they could not.
40And I desired thy disciples to cast him out: and they could not.
41And Jesus answering said, O unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you and suffer you? Bring hither thy son.
41And Jesus, answering:, said: O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and suffer you? Bring hither thy son.
42But as he was yet coming, the demon tore him and dragged him all together. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child and gave him back to his father.
42And as he was coming to him, the devil threw him down and tore him.
43And all were astonished at the glorious greatness ofGod. And as all wondered at all the things which [Jesus] did, he said to his disciples,
43And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and cured the boy and restored him to his father.
44Do ye let these words sink into your ears. For the Son of man is about to be delivered into men's hands.
44And all were astonished at the mighty power of God. But while all wondered at all the things he did, he said to his disciples: Lay you up in your hearts these words, for it shall come to pass that the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
45But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them that they should not perceive it. And they feared to ask him concerning this saying.
45But they understood not this word: and it was hid from them, so that they perceived it not. And they were afraid to ask him concerning this word.
46And a reasoning came in amongst them, who should be [the] greatest of them.
46And there entered a thought into them, which of them should be greater.
47And Jesus, seeing the reasoning of their heart, having taken a little child set it by him,
47But Jesus seeing the thoughts of their hearts, took a child and set him by him,
48and said to them, Whosoever shall receive this little child in my name receives me, and whosoever shall receive me receives him that sent me. For he who is the least among you all, he is great.
48And said to them: Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me; and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me. For he that is the lesser among you all, he is the greater.
49And John answering said, Master, we saw some one casting out demons in thy name, and we forbad him, because he follows not with us.
49And John, answering, said: Master, we saw a certain man casting out devils in thy name: and we forbade him, because he followeth not with us.
50And Jesus said to him, Forbid [him] not, for he that is not against you is for you.
50And Jesus said to him: Forbid him not: for he that is not against you is for you.
51And it came to pass when the days of his receiving up were fulfilled, that he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.
51And it came to pass, when the days of his assumption were accomplishing, that he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.
52And he sent messengers before his face. And having gone they entered into a village of the Samaritans that they might make ready for him.
52And he sent messengers before his face: and going, they entered into a city of the Samaritans, to prepare for him.
53And they did not receive him, because his face was [turned as] going to Jerusalem.
53And they received him not, because his face was of one going to Jerusalem.
54And his disciples James and John seeing [it] said, Lord, wilt thou that we speak [that] fire come down from heaven and consume them, as also Elias did?
54And when his disciples, James and John, had seen this, they said: Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?
55But turning he rebuked them [and said, Ye know not of what spirit ye are].
55And turning, he rebuked them, saying: you know not of what spirit you are.
56And they went to another village.
56The Son of man came not to destroy souls, but to save. And they went into another town.
57And it came to pass as they went in the way, one said to him, I will follow thee wheresoever thou goest, Lord.
57And it came to pass, as they walked in the way, that a certain man said to him: I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
58And Jesus said to him, The foxes have holes and the birds of the heaven roosting-places, but the Son of man has not where he may lay his head.
58Jesus said to him: The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air nests: but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
59And he said to another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, allow me to go first and bury my father.
59But he said to another: Follow me. And he said: Lord, suffer me first to go and to bury my father.
60But Jesus said to him, Suffer the dead to bury their own dead, but do thou go and announce the kingdom ofGod.
60And Jesus said to him: Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
