What Luke 9:43 means

They were amazed at God’s majesty, marveling at all Jesus did. The crowd’s astonishment acknowledges divine presence and power revealed through Jesus’ works. “Majesty of God” points beyond mere technique to the theophany at work in compassion and authority. Their marveling is mixed with wonder at miracles and perhaps confusion about his identity. While public admiration grows, Jesus uses the moment to teach the disciples deeper truths about his forthcoming surrender (v.44), reminding readers that wonder must lead to understanding, not merely spectacle.

Context

This verse follows the healing (v.42) and records the crowd’s reaction of awe. Luke links public amazement to theological reflection: miracles prompt recognition of God’s majesty, but they do not automatically produce correct understanding. Immediately after, Jesus redirects attention to the coming reality of his being handed over (v.44), showing that signs are meant to prepare hearts for the deeper truth of the cross.

v.42And as he was yet a coming, the demon dashed him down, and tare him grievously. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

v.43This passage

v.44Let these words sink into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered up into the hands of men.
