What Mark 6:51 means

Mark 6:51 says Jesus went up into the boat and the wind ceased; they were very amazed. His entering the boat brings immediate peace: the cessation of wind demonstrates his authority over natural forces. The disciples’ amazement reflects both the miracle and the dawning realization of Jesus’ power. Yet their amazement is mixed with incomplete understanding. The verse shows that Jesus’ presence is the decisive factor in turmoil—his coming calms storms both externally and internally. It also continues the pedagogical theme: the disciples are learning who Jesus is by experience, though slowly.

Context

This verse follows Jesus’ reassurance (verse 50) and narrates the calming of the storm when he joins the disciples. It reveals the effect of his presence on nature and the disciples’ emotions. The sequence foreshadows the rebuke in verse 52 about their lack of understanding concerning the loaves, connecting their amazement at physical wonders with their spiritual dullness in grasping Jesus’ identity and works.

v.50for they all saw him, and were troubled. But he straightway spake with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.

v.51This passage

v.52for they understood not concerning the loaves, but their heart was hardened.
