What John 16:14 means

The Spirit’s hallmark is to glorify Jesus. He does this by taking what belongs to Christ and making it known to the disciples. The Spirit does not distract from the Son; He directs attention to Him, unfolding the riches of who Jesus is and what He has accomplished. This ensures that genuine spiritual experience magnifies Christ rather than human teachers or novel ideas. The disciples’ future understanding will be Christ-saturated because the Spirit’s teaching is Christ-derived. In this way, the Spirit applies redemption, makes Jesus’ benefits known, and forms Christlike character. The result is a church centered on the person and work of Jesus, not on the Spirit as an end in Himself.

Context

Continuing the description of the Spirit’s ministry, Jesus clarifies its focus: the glory of the Son. This prepares for the next verse, which grounds this in the unity of the Father and the Son. The flow is Trinitarian: the Spirit communicates what is the Son’s, which is also the Father’s. Having completed this teaching block on the Spirit, Jesus will then return to the near-term events—His departure and return—framed as “a little while,” which confuses the disciples.

v.13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come.

v.14This passage

v.15All things whatsoever the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall declare it unto you.
