John 14

1Let not your heart be troubled: believe in God, believe also in me.

1Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust in me also.

2In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.

2There is plenty of room in my Father’s house. If that weren’t true, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.

3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I come again, and will receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

3If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me, so that you may be where I am.

4And whither I go, ye know the way.

4You know the way to the place where I am going.

5Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; how know we the way?

5Thomas said to him, 'Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?'

6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no one cometh unto the Father, but by me.

6Jesus answered, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'

7If ye had known me, ye would have known my Father also: from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

7If you really knew me, you would know my Father too. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.

8Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

8Philip said to him, 'Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.'

9Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and dost thou not know me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; how sayest thou, Show us the Father?

9Jesus replied, 'Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still don’t know me? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, "Show us the Father"?

10Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I say unto you I speak not from myself: but the Father abiding in me doeth his works.

10Don't you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak to you are not just my own. Instead, it is the Father living in me who is doing his work.

11Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.

11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe because of the miracles themselves.

12Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto the Father.

12I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have been doing, and even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

13And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

13I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.

14If ye shall ask anything in my name, that will I do.

14If you ask for anything in my name, I will do it.

15If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments.

15If you love me, obey my commands.

16And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may be with you for ever,

16I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to be with you forever.

17even the Spirit of truth: whom the world cannot receive; for it beholdeth him not, neither knoweth him: ye know him; for he abideth with you, and shall be in you.

17He is the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him because it doesn't see him or know him. But you know him, because he lives with you and will be in you.

18I will not leave you desolate: I come unto you.

18I will not leave you all alone like orphans; I will come back to you.

19Yet a little while, and the world beholdeth me no more; but ye behold me: because I live, ye shall live also.

19In a little while, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live also.

20In that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

20On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.

21He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself unto him.

21Whoever accepts my commands and obeys them is the one who loves me. My Father will love whoever loves me, and I will love them and show myself to them.

22Judas (not Iscariot) saith unto him, Lord, what is come to pass that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?

22Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, 'Lord, why are you going to show yourself only to us and not to the rest of the world?'

23Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my word: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

23Jesus replied, 'If anyone loves me, they will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.

24He that loveth me not keepeth not my words: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s who sent me.

24Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

25These things have I spoken unto you, while yet abiding with you.

25I have told you all this while I am still with you.

26But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you.

26But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of everything I have told you.

27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

27I leave you with peace; I give you my own peace. I do not give to you the way the world gives. Don’t let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid.

28Ye heard how I said to you, I go away, and I come unto you. If ye loved me, ye would have rejoiced, because I go unto the Father: for the Father is greater than I.

28You heard me say, "I am going away and I am coming back to you." If you loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am.

29And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe.

29I have told you this now before it happens, so that when it does happen, you will believe.

30I will no more speak much with you, for the prince of the world cometh: and he hath nothing in me;

30I will not talk with you much longer, because the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me,

31but that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

31but I do exactly what the Father commanded me so that the world may know that I love the Father. Get up, let’s leave this place.
