What John 14:27 means
Jesus bequeaths peace to His disciples—His own peace, unlike the world’s fragile or superficial calm. This peace flows from reconciliation with God and the steady presence of the Spirit. It does not depend on circumstances but on His lordship and love. He repeats the call not to let their hearts be troubled or fearful, bracketing the chapter’s comforts. The gift is given; the responsibility is to receive and walk in it. In a night of looming betrayal and death, He speaks peace, showing that His departure will not leave them exposed but grounded in a deeper, durable shalom.

John 14 — I Am the Way
On the night before his crucifixion Jesus comforts his disciples. He is going to prepare a place for them; he is the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by him. He promises another Comforter — the Holy Spirit — who will dwell in them and bring his words to remembrance. The peace he gives is not as the world gives. Even with the cross hours away, he turns from his own sorrow to steady theirs.

Context
Following the promise of the Spirit’s teaching ministry, Jesus applies its fruit: settled peace. This echoes the chapter’s opening and prepares them for the hard saying that He is going away. The next verse explains why they should even rejoice at His going—because He returns to the Father, who is greater in the order of redemptive mission. Understanding this will help them face the coming events with faith, not panic, interpreting them through the lens of divine purpose and peace.
v.26But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you.
v.27This passage
v.28Ye heard how I said to you, I go away, and I come unto you. If ye loved me, ye would have rejoiced, because I go unto the Father: for the Father is greater than I.
