1Thus saith the Lord unto me, Go and get thee a linen girdle, and put it upon thy loins, and put it not in water.

1Thus saith the Lord to me: Go, and get thee a linen girdle, and thou shalt put it about thy loins, and shalt not put it into water.

1Thus said Jehovah unto me, `Go, and thou hast got for thee a girdle of linen, and hast placed it on thy loins, and into water thou dost not cause it to enter:'

1This is what the Lord said to me: Go and get yourself a linen band and put it round you and do not put it in water.

2So I got a girdle according to the word of the Lord, and put it on my loins.

2And I got a girdle according to the word of the Lord, and put it about my loins.

2and I get the girdle, according to the word of Jehovah, and I place <FI>it<Fi> on my loins.

2So, as the Lord said, I got a band for a price and put it round my body.

3And the word of the Lord came unto me the second time, saying,

3And the word of the Lord came to me the second time, saying:

3And there is a word of Jehovah unto me a second time, saying,

3And the word of the Lord came to me a second time, saying,

4Take the girdle that thou hast got, which is upon thy loins, and arise, go to Euphrates, and hide it there in a hole of the rock.

4Take the girdle which thou hast got, which is about thy loins, and arise, go to the Euphrates, and hide it there in a hole of the rock.

4`Take the girdle that thou hast got, that <FI>is<Fi> on thy loins, and rise, go to Phrat, and hide it there in a hole of the rock;

4Take the band which you got for a price, which is round your body, and go to Parah and put it in a secret place there in a hole of the rock.

5So I went, and hid it by Euphrates, as the Lord commanded me.

5And I went, and hid it by the Euphrates, as the Lord had commanded me.

5and I go and hide it by Phrat, as Jehovah commanded me.

5So I went and put it in a secret place by Parah, as the Lord had said to me.

6And it came to pass after many days, that the Lord said unto me, Arise, go to Euphrates, and take the girdle from thence, which I commanded thee to hide there.

6And it came to pass after many days, that the Lord said to me: Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take from thence the girdle, which I commanded thee to hide there.

6And it cometh to pass, at the end of many days, that Jehovah saith unto me, `Rise, go to Phrat, and take thence the girdle, that I commanded thee to hide there;'

6Then after a long time, the Lord said to me, Up! go to Parah and get the band which I gave you orders to put there.

7Then I went to Euphrates, and digged, and took the girdle from the place where I had hid it: and, behold, the girdle was marred, it was profitable for nothing.

7And I went to the Euphrates, and digged, and took the girdle out of the place where I had hid it and behold the girdle was rotten, so that it was fit for no use.

7and I go to Phrat, and dig, and take the girdle from the place where I had hid it; and lo, the girdle hath been marred, it is not profitable for anything.

7So I went to Parah and, uncovering the hole, took the band from the place where I had put it away: and the band was damaged and of no use for anything.

8Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

8And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:

8And there is a word of Jehovah unto me, saying, `Thus said Jehovah:

8Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

9Thus saith the Lord, After this manner will I mar the pride of Judah, and the great pride of Jerusalem.

9Thus saith the Lord: After this manner will I make the pride of Juda, and the great pride of Jerusalem to rot.

9Thus do I mar the excellency of Judah, And the great excellency of Jerusalem.

9The Lord has said, In this way I will do damage to the pride of Judah and to the great pride of Jerusalem.

10This evil people, which refuse to hear my words, which walk in the imagination of their heart, and walk after other gods, to serve them, and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle, which is good for nothing.

10This wicked people, that will not hear my words, and that walk in the perverseness of their heart, and have gone after strange gods to serve them, and to adore them: and they shall be as this girdle ,which is fit for no use.

10This evil people, who refuse to hear My words, Who walk in the stubbornness of their heart, And go after other gods to serve them, And to bow themselves to them, Yea it is--as this girdle, that is not profitable for anything.

10These evil people who say they will not give ear to my words, who go on in the pride of their hearts and have become servants and worshippers of other gods, will become like this band which is of no use for anything.

11For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith the Lord; that they might be unto me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.

11For as the girdle sticketh close to the loins of a man, so have I brought close to me all the house of Israel, and all the house of Juda, saith the Lord: that they might be my people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.

11For, as the girdle cleaveth unto the loins of a man, So I caused to cleave unto Me The whole house of Israel, And the whole house of Judah, an affirmation of Jehovah, To be to Me for a people, and for a name, And for praise, and for beauty, And they have not hearkened.

11For as a band goes tightly round a man's body, so I made all the people of Israel and all the people of Judah tightly united to me; so that they might be a people for me and a name and a praise and a glory: but they would not give ear.

12Therefore thou shalt speak unto them this word; Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Every bottle shall be filled with wine: and they shall say unto thee, Do we not certainly know that every bottle shall be filled with wine?

12Thou shalt speak therefore to them this word: Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: Every bottle shall be filled with wine. And they shall say to thee: Do we not know that every bottle shall be filled with wine?

12And thou hast said unto them this word, Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, `Every bottle is full of wine,' And they have said unto thee: `Do we not certainly know that every bottle is full of wine?'

12So you are to say this word to them: This is the word of the Lord, the God of Israel: Every skin bottle will be full of wine; and they will say to you, Is it not quite clear to us that every skin bottle will be full of wine?

13Then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings that sit upon David’s throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with drunkenness.

13And thou shalt say to them: Thus saith the Lord: Behold I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, and the kings of the race of David that sit upon his throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with drunkenness.

13And thou hast said unto them, `Thus said Jehovah: Lo, I am filling all the inhabitants of this land, And the kings who sit for David on his throne, And the priests, and the prophets, And all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, <FI>With<Fi> drunkenness,

13Then you are to say to them, The Lord has said, I will make all the people of this land, even the kings seated on David's seat, and the priests and the prophets and all the people of Jerusalem, overcome with strong drink.

14And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the Lord: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.

14And I will scatter them every man from his brother, and fathers and sons in like manner, saith the Lord: I will not spare, and I will not pardon: nor will I have mercy, but to destroy them.

14And have dashed them one against another, And the fathers and the sons together, An affirmation of Jehovah, I do not pity, nor spare, nor have I mercy, So as not to destroy them.

14I will have them smashed against one another, fathers and sons together, says the Lord: I will have no pity or mercy, I will have no feeling for them to keep me from giving them to destruction.

15Hear ye, and give ear; be not proud: for the Lord hath spoken.

15Hear ye, and give ear: Be not proud, for the Lord hath spoken.

15Hear, and give ear--be not haughty, For Jehovah hath spoken.

15Give ear and let your ears be open; be not lifted up: for these are the words of the Lord.

16Give glory to the Lord your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness.

16Give ye glory to the Lord your God, before it be dark, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains: you shall look for light, and he will turn it into the shadow of death, and into darkness.

16Give ye to Jehovah your God honour, Before He doth cause darkness, And before your feet stumble on dark mountains, And ye have waited for light, And He hath made it for death-shade, And hath appointed <FI>it<Fi> for thick darkness.

16Give glory to the Lord your God, before he makes it dark, and before your feet are slipping on the dark mountains, and, while you are looking for a light, he makes it into deep dark, into black night.

17But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places for your pride; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because the Lord’s flock is carried away captive.

17But if you will not hear this, my soul shall weep in secret for your pride: weeping it shall weep, and my eyes shall run down with tears, because the flock of the Lord is carried away captive.

17And if ye do not hear it, In secret places doth my soul weep, because of pride, Yea, it weepeth sore, And the tear cometh down mine eyes, For the flock of Jehovah hath been taken captive.

17But if you do not give ear to it, my soul will be weeping in secret for your pride; my eye will be weeping bitterly, streaming with water, because the Lord's flock has been taken away as prisoners.

18Say unto the king and to the queen, Humble yourselves, sit down: for your principalities shall come down, even the crown of your glory.

18Say to the king, and to the queen: Humble yourselves, sit down: for the crown of your glory is come down from your head.

18Say to the king and to the mistress: Make yourselves low--sit still, For come down have your principalities, The crown of your beauty.

18Say to the king and to the queen-mother, Make yourselves low, be seated on the earth: for the crown of your glory has come down from your heads.

19The cities of the south shall be shut up, and none shall open them: Judah shall be carried away captive all of it, it shall be wholly carried away captive.

19The cities of the south are shut up, and there is none to open them: all Juda is carried away captive with an entire captivity.

19The cities of the south have been shut up, And there is none opening, Judah hath been removed--all of her, She hath been removed completely--

19The towns of the south are shut up, and there is no one to make them open: Judah is taken away as prisoners; all Judah is taken away as prisoners.

20Lift up your eyes, and behold them that come from the north: where is the flock that was given thee, thy beautiful flock?

20Lift up your eyes, and see, you that come from the north: where is the flock that is given thee, thy beautiful cattle?

20Lift up your eyes, and see those coming in from the north, Where <FI>is<Fi> the drove given to thee, thy beautiful flock?

20Let your eyes be lifted up (O Jerusalem), and see those who are coming from the north. Where is the flock which was given to you, your beautiful flock?

21What wilt thou say when he shall punish thee? for thou hast taught them to be captains, and as chief over thee: shall not sorrows take thee, as a woman in travail?

21What wilt thou say when he shall visit thee? for thou hast taught them against thee, and instructed them against thy own head: shall not sorrows lay hold on thee, as a woman in labour?

21What dost thou say, when He looketh after thee? And thou--thou hast taught them <FI>to be<Fi> over thee--leaders for head? Do not pangs seize thee as a travailing woman?

21What will you say when he puts over you those whom you yourself have made your friends? will not pains take you like a woman in childbirth?

22And if thou say in thine heart, Wherefore come these things upon me? For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered, and thy heels made bare.

22And if thou shalt say in thy heart: Why are these things come upon me? For the greatness of thy iniquity, thy nakedness is discovered, the soles of thy feet are defiled.

22And when thou dost say in thy heart, `Wherefore have these met me?' For the abundance of thine iniquity Have thy skirts been uncovered, Have thy heels suffered violence.

22And if you say in your heart, Why have these things come on me? because of the number of your sins, your skirts have been uncovered and violent punishment overtakes you.

23Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.

23If the Ethiopian can change his skin, or the leopard his spots: you also may do well, when you have learned evil.

23Doth a Cushite change his skin? and a leopard his spots? Ye also are able to do good, who are accustomed to do evil.

23Is it possible for the skin of the Ethiopian to be changed, or the markings on the leopard? Then it might be possible for you to do good, who have been trained to do evil.

24Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passeth away by the wind of the wilderness.

24And I will scatter them as stubble, which is carried away by the wind in the desert.

24And I scatter them as stubble, Passing away, by a wind of the wilderness.

24So I will send them in all directions, as dry grass is taken away by the wind of the waste land.

25This is thy lot, the portion of thy measures from me, saith the Lord; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood.

25This is thy lot, and the portion of thy measure from me, saith the Lord, because thou hast forgotten me, and hast trusted in falsehood.

25This <FI>is<Fi> thy lot, the portion of thy measures from Me--an affirmation of Jehovah, Because thou hast forgotten me, And dost trust in falsehood.

25This is your fate, the part measured out to you by me, says the Lord, because you have put me out of your memory and put your faith in what is false.

26Therefore will I discover thy skirts upon thy face, that thy shame may appear.

26Wherefore I have also bared thy thighs against thy face, and thy shame hath appeared.

26I also have made bare thy skirts before thy face, And thy shame hath been seen.

26So I will have your skirts uncovered before your face, in order that your shame may be seen.

27I have seen thine adulteries, and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy whoredom, and thine abominations on the hills in the fields. Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem! wilt thou not be made clean? when shall it once be?

27I have seen thy adulteries, and thy neighing, the wickedness of thy fornication: and thy abominations, upon the hills in the field. Woe to thee, Jerusalem, wilt thou not be made clean after me: how long yet?

27Thine adulteries, and thy neighings, The wickedness of thy whoredom, on heights in a field, I have seen thine abominations. Woe to thee, O Jerusalem, Thou art not cleansed, after when <FI>is it<Fi> again?

27I have seen your disgusting acts, even your false behaviour and your cries of desire and your loose ways on the hills in the field. Unhappy are you, O Jerusalem, you have no desire to be made clean; how long will you be in turning back to me?
