Isaiah 63

1Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, marching in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.

1Who is this coming from Edom, coming from Bozrah with clothes stained red? Who is this dressed in splendor, marching with great strength? 'It is I, announcing justice, powerful enough to save.'

2Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winevat?

2Why are your clothes red? Why is your clothing like someone who has been stepping on grapes in a winepress?

3I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the peoples there was no man with me: yea, I trod them in mine anger, and trampled them in my wrath; and their lifeblood is sprinkled upon my garments, and I have stained all my raiment.

3'I have stepped on the winepress alone; no one from the nations was there to help me. I stomped on them in my anger and trampled them in my fury. Their blood splattered on my clothes, and I have stained all my robes.'

4For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.

4'For I had planned the day of vengeance, and the year for me to rescue my people has arrived.'

5And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my wrath, it upheld me.

5'I looked, but there was no one to help; I was shocked that no one offered support. So my own power brought victory, and my own anger sustained me.'

6And I trod down the peoples in mine anger, and made them drunk in my wrath, and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.

6'I crushed the nations in my anger and made them stagger in my fury; I poured their blood out on the ground.'

7I will make mention of the lovingkindnesses of Jehovah, and the praises of Jehovah, according to all that Jehovah hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.

7I will tell about the LORD’s constant love and praise him for everything he has done for us. He has shown great goodness to the people of Israel because of his mercy and his many acts of kindness.

8For he said, Surely, they are my people, children that will not deal falsely: so he was their Saviour.

8For he said, 'They are certainly my people, children who will not be unfaithful.' So he became their Savior.

9In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.

9In all their suffering he suffered with them, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and mercy he rescued them; he lifted them up and carried them throughout the days of old.

10But they rebelled, and grieved his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, andhimself fought against them.

10But they rebelled against him and made his Holy Spirit sad. So he turned into their enemy and fought against them himself.

11Then he remembered the days of old, Mosesandhis people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit in the midst of them?

11Then his people remembered the old days, the days of Moses. They asked, 'Where is the one who brought them through the sea with the shepherds of his flock? Where is the one who put his Holy Spirit among them?'

12that caused his glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses? that divided the waters before them, to make himself an everlasting name?

12'Where is the one who sent his powerful arm to support Moses, who divided the waters in front of them to make his name famous forever?'

13that led them through the depths, as a horse in the wilderness, so that they stumbled not?

13'Where is the one who led them through the deep waters? They were like a horse in the open country; they did not stumble.'

14As the cattle that go down into the valley, the Spirit of Jehovah caused them to rest: so didst thou lead thy people, to make thyself a glorious name.

14Like cattle going down into a peaceful valley, the Spirit of the LORD gave them rest. This is how you led your people to make your name famous and glorious.

15Look down from heaven, and behold from the habitation of thy holiness and of thy glory: where are thy zeal and thy mighty acts? the yearning of thy heart and thy compassions are restrained toward me.

15Look down from heaven and see us from your holy and glorious home. Where are your passion and your power? You are holding back your deep affection and mercy from us.

16For thou art our Father, though Abraham knoweth us not, and Israel doth not acknowledge us: thou, O Jehovah, art our Father; our Redeemer from everlasting is thy name.

16You are still our Father. Even if Abraham does not know us and Jacob does not recognize us, you, LORD, are our Father. Your name has always been 'Our Redeemer.'

17O Jehovah, why dost thou make us to err from thy ways, and hardenest our heart from thy fear? Return for thy servants’ sake, the tribes of thine inheritance.

17LORD, why do you let us wander from your paths? Why do you make our hearts stubborn so that we don’t respect you? Come back for the sake of your servants, the tribes that belong to you.

18Thy holy people possessed it but a little while: our adversaries have trodden down thy sanctuary.

18Your holy people owned the land for only a short time; now our enemies have trampled down your holy temple.

19We are become as they over whom thou never barest rule, as they that were not called by thy name.

19We have become like people you never ruled, like people who were never called by your name.
