1And thou, son of man, prophesy unto the mountains of Israel, and say, Ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of Jehovah.
1Son of man, speak as a prophet to the mountains of Israel. Tell them, 'Mountains of Israel, listen to the message from the LORD.'
2Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Because the enemy hath said against you, Aha! and, The ancient high places are ours in possession;
2The Lord GOD says: Your enemies cheered when you were ruined. They said, 'Great! Now these ancient mountain heights belong to us.'
3therefore prophesy, and say, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Because, even because they have made you desolate, and swallowed you up on every side, that ye might be a possession unto the residue of the nations, and ye are taken up in the lips of talkers, and the evil report of the people;
3Therefore, prophesy and say that the Lord GOD says: Because they crushed you and attacked you from every side, making you the possession of other nations, and because people now gossip and whisper insults about you,
4therefore, ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord Jehovah: Thus saith the Lord Jehovah to the mountains and to the hills, to the watercourses and to the valleys, to the desolate wastes and to the cities that are forsaken, which are become a prey and derision to the residue of the nations that are round about;
4therefore, mountains of Israel, listen to the word of the Lord GOD. This is what the Lord GOD says to the mountains, hills, streams, valleys, ruined places, and deserted cities that were looted and mocked by the surrounding nations.
5therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Surely in the fire of my jealousy have I spoken against the residue of the nations, and against all Edom, that have appointed my land unto themselves for a possession with the joy of all their heart, with despite of soul, to cast it out for a prey.
5The Lord GOD says: In my burning anger I have spoken out against the other nations and all of Edom. With great joy and deep contempt, they took my land for themselves to plunder it.
6Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel, and say unto the mountains and to the hills, to the watercourses and to the valleys, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, I have spoken in my jealousy and in my wrath, because ye have borne the shame of the nations:
6So prophesy about the land of Israel. Say to the mountains, hills, streams, and valleys: This is what the Lord GOD says: I am speaking in my jealous fury because you have suffered the insults of the nations.
7therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: I have sworn, saying, Surely the nations that are round about you, they shall bear their shame.
7Therefore, the Lord GOD says: I swear with an uplifted hand that the nations around you will have to suffer their own share of shame.
8But ye, O mountains of Israel, ye shall shoot forth your branches, and yield your fruit to my people Israel; for they are at hand to come.
8But you, mountains of Israel, will grow branches and produce fruit for my people Israel, because they are coming home soon.
9For, behold, I am for you, and I will turn unto you, and ye shall be tilled and sown;
9See, I am on your side. I will come to help you, and you will be plowed and planted again.
10and I will multiply men upon you, all the house of Israel, even all of it; and the cities shall be inhabited, and the waste places shall be builded;
10I will greatly increase the number of people living on you—all the people of Israel. The cities will be lived in and the ruins will be rebuilt.
11and I will multiply upon you man and beast; and they shall increase and be fruitful; and I will cause you to be inhabited after your former estate, and will do better unto you than at your beginnings: and ye shall know that I am Jehovah.
11I will multiply both people and animals on you; they will grow and have many offspring. I will settle you as you were in the past and make you even more prosperous than you were at the beginning. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
12Yea, I will cause men to walk upon you, even my people Israel; and they shall possess thee, and thou shalt be their inheritance, and thou shalt no more henceforth bereave them of children.
12I will lead people—my people Israel—to walk upon you. They will own you, you will be their inheritance, and you will never again take their children away from them.
13Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Because they say unto you, Thou land art a devourer of men, and hast been a bereaver of thy nation;
13The Lord GOD says: Because people say to you, 'You are a land that devours people and robs your nation of its children,'
14therefore thou shalt devour men no more, neither bereave thy nation any more, saith the Lord Jehovah;
14you will no longer devour people or make your nation childless, says the Lord GOD.
15neither will I let thee hear any more the shame of the nations, neither shalt thou bear the reproach of the peoples any more, neither shalt thou cause thy nation to stumble any more, saith the Lord Jehovah.
15I will not make you listen to the insults of the nations anymore. You will no longer suffer the scorn of the people or cause your nation to fall, says the Lord GOD.
16Moreover the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,
16Then another message from the LORD came to me:
17Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, they defiled it by their way and by their doings: their way before me was as the uncleanness of a woman in her impurity.
17Son of man, when the people of Israel lived in their own land, they made it unclean by the way they lived and the things they did. To me, their conduct was as unclean as a woman’s monthly period.
18Wherefore I poured out my wrath upon them for the blood which they had poured out upon the land, and because they had defiled it with their idols;
18So I poured out my anger on them because they shed blood in the land and because they polluted it with their idols. provincial
19and I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries: according to their way and according to their doings I judged them.
19I scattered them among the nations and dispersed them through many lands. I judged them according to how they lived and what they did.
20And when they came unto the nations, whither they went, they profaned my holy name; in that men said of them, These are the people of Jehovah, and are gone forth out of his land.
20But wherever they went among the nations, they brought shame to my holy name. People said about them, 'These are the LORD’s people, yet they had to leave his land.'
21But I had regard for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations, whither they went.
21I was concerned for my holy name, which the people of Israel dishonored among the nations where they had gone.
22Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: I do not this for your sake, O house of Israel, but for my holy name, which ye have profaned among the nations, whither ye went.
22Therefore, say to the people of Israel: This is what the Lord GOD says: I am not doing this for your sake, Israel, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have dishonored among the nations.
23And I will sanctify my great name, which hath been profaned among the nations, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the nations shall know that I am Jehovah, saith the Lord Jehovah, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes.
23I will show how holy my great name is, which has been dishonored among the nations because of you. When I show my holiness through you right before their eyes, the nations will know that I am the LORD, says the Lord GOD.
24For I will take you from among the nations, and gather you out of all the countries, and will bring you into your own land.
24For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back to your own land.
25And I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.
25I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will wash away all your filthiness and all your idols.
26A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.
26I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit inside you. I will take out your stubborn heart of stone and give you a tender heart of flesh.
27And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep mine ordinances, and do them.
27I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to follow my laws and be careful to obey my regulations.
28And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.
28Then you will live in the land I gave to your ancestors. You will be my people, and I will be your God.
29And I will save you from all your uncleannesses: and I will call for the grain, and will multiply it, and lay no famine upon you.
29I will save you from everything that makes you unclean. I will command the grain to grow and become plentiful, and I will never bring a famine on you again.
30And I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that ye may receive no more the reproach of famine among the nations.
30I will increase the fruit on the trees and the crops in the fields so that you will never again be shamed by famine among the nations.
31Then shall ye remember your evil ways, and your doings that were not good; and ye shall loathe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations.
31Then you will remember your past evil ways and your wicked deeds. You will hate yourselves for the sins and disgusting things you did.
32Nor for your sake do Ithis, saith the Lord Jehovah, be it known unto you: be ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel.
32I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, says the Lord GOD. Be ashamed and disgraced because of your behavior, people of Israel!
33Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: In the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places shall be builded.
33The Lord GOD says: On the day I cleanse you from all your sins, I will return people to the cities, and the ruins will be rebuilt.
34And the land that was desolate shall be tilled, whereas it was a desolation in the sight of all that passed by.
34The land that was empty and scarred will be farmed again, instead of lying desolate for everyone passing by to see.
35And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are fortified and inhabited.
35People will say, 'This land that was once a wasteland has become like the Garden of Eden! The cities that were in ruins, deserted and destroyed, are now fortified and lived in.'
36Then the nations that are left round about you shall know that I, Jehovah, have builded the ruined places, and planted that which was desolate: I, Jehovah, have spoken it, and I will do it.
36Then the nations that are left around you will know that I, the LORD, have rebuilt what was destroyed and replanted what was empty. I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will do it.
37Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: For this, moreover, will I be inquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them: I will increase them with men like a flock.
37The Lord GOD says: I will also let the people of Israel ask me to do this for them: I will increase their number of people like a flock of sheep.
38As the flock for sacrifice, as the flock of Jerusalem in her appointed feasts, so shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of men; and they shall know that I am Jehovah.
38The ruined cities will be filled with crowds of people, just as Jerusalem was filled with flocks of sheep for the holy festivals. Then they will know that I am the LORD.
