Deuteronomy 22

1Thou shalt not see thy brother’s ox or his sheep go astray, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt surely bring them again unto thy brother.

1`Thou dost not see the ox of thy brother or his sheep driven away, and hast hidden thyself from them, thou dost certainly turn them back to thy brother;

1If you see your brother's ox or his sheep wandering, do not go by without helping, but take them back to your brother.

1Thou shalt not pass by if thou seest thy brother's ox, or his sheep go astray: but thou shalt bring them back to thy brother.

2And if thy brother be not nigh unto thee, or if thou know him not, then thou shalt bring it home to thy house, and it shall be with thee until thy brother seek after it, and thou shalt restore it to him.

2and if thy brother <FI>is<Fi> not near unto thee, and thou hast not known him, then thou hast removed it unto the midst of thy house, and it hath been with thee till thy brother seek it, and thou hast given it back to him;

2If their owner is not near, or if you are not certain who he is, then take the beast to your house and keep it till its owner comes in search of it, and then you are to give it back to him.

2And if thy brother be not nigh, or thou know him not: thou shalt bring them to thy house, and they shall be with thee until thy brother seek them, and receive them.

3And so shalt thou do with his ass; and so shalt thou do with his garment; and so shalt thou do with every lost thing of thy brother’s, which he hath lost, and thou hast found: thou mayest not hide thyself.

3and so thou dost to his ass, and so thou dost to his garment, and so thou dost to any lost thing of thy brother's, which is lost by him, and thou hast found it; thou art not able to hide thyself.

3Do the same with his ass or his robe or anything which has gone from your brother's keeping and which you have come across: do not keep it to yourself.

3Thou shalt do in like manner with his ass, and with his raiment, and with every thing that is thy brother's, which is lost: if thou find it, neglect it not as pertaining to another.

4Thou shalt not see thy brother’s ass or his ox fallen down by the way, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again.

4`Thou dost not see the ass of thy brother, or his ox, falling in the way, and hast hid thyself from them; thou dost certainly raise <FI>them<Fi> up with him.

4If you see your brother's ox or his ass falling down on the road, do not go by without giving him help in lifting it up again.

4If thou see thy brother's ass or his ox to be fallen down in the way, thou shalt not slight it, but shalt lift it up with him.

5A woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment; for whosoever doeth these things is an abomination unto Jehovah thy God.

5`The habiliments of a man are not on a woman, nor doth a man put on the garment of a woman, for the abomination of Jehovah thy God <FI>is<Fi> any one doing these.

5It is not right for a woman to be dressed in man's clothing, or for a man to put on a woman's robe: whoever does such things is disgusting to the Lord your God.

5A woman shall not be clothed with man's apparel, neither shall a man use woman's apparel: for he that doth these things is abominable before God.

6If a bird’s nest chance to be before thee in the way, in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs, and the dam sitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young:

6`When a bird's nest cometh before thee in the way, in any tree, or on the earth, brood or eggs, and the mother sitting on the brood or on the eggs, thou dost not take the mother with the young ones;

6If by chance you see a place which a bird has made for itself in a tree or on the earth, with young ones or eggs, and the mother bird seated on the young ones or on the eggs, do not take the mother bird with the young:

6If thou find as thou walkest by the way, a bird's nest in a tree, or on the ground, and the dam sitting upon the young or upon the eggs: thou shalt not take her with her young:

7thou shalt surely let the dam go, but the young thou mayest take unto thyself; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days.

7thou dost certainly send away the mother, and the young ones dost take to thyself, so that it is well with thee, and thou hast prolonged days.

7See that you let the mother bird go, but the young ones you may take; so it will be well for you and your life will be long.

7But shalt let her go, keeping the young which thou hast caught: that it may be well with thee, and thou mayst live a long time.

8When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thy house, if any man fall from thence.

8`When thou buildest a new house, then thou hast made a parapet to thy roof, and thou dost not put blood on thy house when one falleth from it.

8If you are building a house, make a railing for the roof, so that the blood of any man falling from it will not come on your house.

8When thou buildest a new house, thou shalt make a battlement to the roof round about: lest blood be shed in thy house, and thou be guilty, if any one slip, and fall down headlong.

9Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with two kinds of seed, lest the whole fruit be forfeited, the seed which thou hast sown, and the increase of the vineyard.

9`Thou dost not sow thy vineyard <FI>with<Fi> divers things, lest the fulness of the seed which thou dost sow, and the increase of the vineyard, be separated.

9Do not have your vine-garden planted with two sorts of seed: or all of it may become a loss, the seed you have put in as well as the increase.

9Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with divers seeds: lest both the seed which thou hast sown, and the fruit of the vineyard, be sanctified together.

10Thou shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together.

10`Thou dost not plow with an ox and with an ass together.

10Do not do your ploughing with an ox and an ass yoked together.

10Thou shalt not plough with an ox and an ass together.

11Thou shalt not wear a mingled stuff, wool and linen together.

11`Thou dost not put on a mixed cloth, wool and linen together.

11Do not have clothing made of two sorts of thread, wool and linen together.

11Thou shalt not wear a garment that is woven of woollen and linen together.

12Thou shalt make thee fringes upon the four borders of thy vesture, wherewith thou coverest thyself.

12`Fringes thou dost make to thee on the four skirts of thy covering with which thou dost cover <FI>thyself<Fi> .

12On the four edges of your robe, with which your body is covered, put ornaments of twisted threads.

12Thou shalt make strings in the hem at the four corners of thy cloak, wherewith thou shalt be covered.

13If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her,

13`When a man taketh a wife, and hath gone in unto her, and hated her,

13If any man takes a wife, and having had connection with her, has no delight in her,

13If a man marry a wife, and afterwards hate her,

14and lay shameful things to her charge, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came nigh to her, I found not in her the tokens of virginity;

14and laid against her actions of words, and brought out against her an evil name, and said, This woman I have taken, and I draw near unto her, and I have not found in her tokens of virginity:

14And says evil things about her and gives her a bad name, saying, I took this woman, and when I had connection with her it was clear to me that she was not a virgin:

14And seek occasions to put her away, laying to her charge a very ill name, and say: I took this woman to wife, and going in to her, I found her not a virgin:

15then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel’s virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate;

15`Then hath the father of the damsel--and her mother--taken and brought out the tokens of virginity of the damsel unto the elders of the city in the gate,

15Then let the girl's father and mother put before the responsible men of the town, in the public place, signs that the girl was a virgin:

15Her father and mother shall take her, and shall bring with them the tokens of her virginity to the ancients of the city that are in the gate:

16and the damsel’s father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her;

16and the father of the damsel hath said unto the elders, My daughter I have given to this man for a wife, and he doth hate her;

16And let the girl's father say to the responsible men, I gave my daughter to this man for his wife, but he has no love for her;

16And the father shall say: I gave my daughter unto this man to wife: and because he hateth her,

17and, lo, he hath laid shameful things to her charge, saying, I found not in thy daughter the tokens of virginity; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter’s virginity. And they shall spread the garment before the elders of the city.

17and lo, he hath laid actions of words, saying, I have not found to thy daughter tokens of virginity--and these <FI>are<Fi> the tokens of the virginity of my daughter! and they have spread out the garment before the elders of the city.

17And now he has put shame on her, saying that she is not a virgin; but here is the sign that she is a virgin. Then they are to put her clothing before the responsible men of the town.

17He layeth to her charge a very ill name, so as to say: I found not thy daughter a virgin: and behold these are the tokens of my daughter's virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the ancients of the city:

18And the elders of that city shall take the man and chastise him;

18`And the elders of that city have taken the man, and chastise him,

18Then the responsible men of the town are to give the man his punishment;

18And the ancients of that city shall take that man, and beat him,

19and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.

19and fined him a hundred silverlings, and given to the father of the damsel, because he hath brought out an evil name on a virgin of Israel, and she is to him for a wife, he is not able to send her away all his days.

19They will take from him a hundred shekels of silver, which are to be given to the father of the girl, because he has given an evil name to a virgin of Israel: she will go on being his wife, he may never put her away all his life.

19Condemning him besides in a hundred sicles of silver, which he shall give to the damsel's father, because he hath defamed by a very ill name a virgin of Israel: and he shall have her to wife, and may not put her away all the days of his life.

20But if this thing be true, that the tokens of virginity were not found in the damsel;

20`And if this thing hath been truth--tokens of virginity have not been found for the damsel--

20But if what he has said is true, and she is seen to be not a virgin,

20But if what he charged her with be true, and virginity be not found in the damsel:

21then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the harlot in her father’s house: so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee.

21then they have brought out the damsel unto the opening of her father's house, and stoned her have the men of her city with stones, and she hath died, for she hath done folly in Israel, to go a-whoring <FI>in<Fi> her father's house; and thou hast put away the evil thing out of thy midst.

21Then they are to make the girl come to the door of her father's house and she will be stoned to death by the men of the town, because she has done evil and put shame on Israel, by acting as a loose woman in her father's house: so you are to put away evil from among you.

21They shall cast her out of the doors of her father's house, and the men of the city shall stone her to death, and she shall die: because she hath done a wicked thing in Israel, to play the whore in her father's house: and thou shalt take away the evil out of the midst of thee.

22If a man be found lying with a woman married to a husband, then they shall both of them die, the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away the evil from Israel.

22`When a man is found lying with a woman, married to a husband, then they have died even both of them, the man who is lying with the woman, also the woman; and thou hast put away the evil thing out of Israel.

22If a man is taken in the act of going in to a married woman, the two of them, the man as well as the woman, are to be put to death: so you are to put away the evil from Israel.

22If a man lie with another man's wife, they shall both die, that is to say, the adulterer and the adulteress: and thou shalt take away the evil out of Israel.

23If there be a damsel that is a virgin betrothed unto a husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her;

23`When there is a damsel, a virgin, betrothed to a man, and a man hath found her in a city, and lain with her;

23If a young virgin has given her word to be married to a man, and another man meeting her in the town, has connection with her;

23If a man have espoused a damsel that is a virgin, and some one find her in the city, and lie with her,

24then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them to death with stones; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbor’s wife: so thou shalt put away the evil from the midst of thee.

24then ye have brought them both out unto the gate of that city, and stoned them with stones, and they have died: --the damsel, because that she hath not cried, <FI>being<Fi> in a city; and the man, because that he hath humbled his neighbour's wife; and thou hast put away the evil thing out of thy midst.

24Then you are to take the two of them to the doorway of the town, and have them stoned to death; the young virgin, because she gave no cry for help, though it was in the town, and the man, because he has put shame on his neighbour's wife: so you are to put away evil from among you.

24Thou shalt bring them both out to the gate of that city, and they shall be stoned: the damsel, because she cried not out, being in the city: the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's wife. And thou shalt take away the evil from the midst of thee.

25But if the man find the damsel that is betrothed in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her; then the man only that lay with her shall die:

25`And if in a field the man find the damsel who is betrothed, and the man hath laid hold on her, and lain with her, then hath the man who hath lain with her died alone;

25But if the man, meeting such a virgin in the open country, takes her by force, then only the man is to be put to death;

25But if a man find a damsel that is betrothed, in the field, and taking hold of her, lie with her, he alone shall die:

26but unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbor, and slayeth him, even so is this matter;

26and to the damsel thou dost not do anything, the damsel hath no deadly sin; for as a man riseth against his neighbour and hath murdered him--the life, so <FI>is<Fi> this thing;

26Nothing is to be done to the virgin, because there is no cause of death in her: it is the same as if a man made an attack on his neighbour and put him to death:

26The damsel shall suffer nothing, neither is she guilty of death: for as a robber riseth against his brother, and taketh away his life, so also did the damsel suffer:

27for he found her in the field, the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her.

27for in a field he found her, she hath cried--the damsel who is betrothed--and she hath no saviour.

27For he came across her in the open country, and there was no one to come to the help of the virgin in answer to her cry.

27She was alone in the field: she cried, and there was no man to help her.

28If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, that is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found;

28`When a man findeth a damsel, a virgin who is not betrothed, and hath caught her, and lain with her, and they have been found,

28If a man sees a young virgin, who has not given her word to be married to anyone, and he takes her by force and has connection with her, and discovery is made of it;

28If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, who is not espoused, and taking her, lie with her, and the matter come to judgment:

29then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he hath humbled her; he may not put her away all his days.

29then hath the man who is lying with her given to the father of the damsel fifty silverlings, and to him she is for a wife; because that he hath humbled her, he is not able to send her away all his days.

29Then the man will have to give the virgin's father fifty shekels of silver and make her his wife, because he has put shame on her; he may never put her away all his life.

29He that lay with her shall give to the father of the maid fifty sicles of silver, and shall have her to wife, because he hath humbled her: he may not put her away all the days of his life.

30A man shall not take his father’s wife, and shall not uncover his father’s skirt.

30`A man doth not take his father's wife, nor uncover his father's skirt.

30A man may not take his father's wife or have sex relations with a woman who is his father's.

30No man shall take his father's wife, nor remove his covering.
