רָבָה

(raw-BAH)

verb

To become great, many, or much, often in reference to numerical increase or growth in quality or quantity.

The Hebrew verb *rabah* primarily conveys the idea of increasing, multiplying, or becoming great. This increase can be in number, size, strength, or quantity. It often describes the abundant blessing of God, particularly in the context of covenant promises. This is clearly seen in the divine mandate to "be fruitful and multiply," a pronouncement made to humanity and later reaffirmed to the patriarchs concerning their descendants. It can also describe a quantitative increase in non-physical things, such as wisdom or sorrow, or even the increase of an animal population. The Septuagint frequently translates *rabah* with Greek terms like πληθύνω (plēthunō), meaning "to multiply" or "to increase," and sometimes with μεγαλύνω (megalunō), meaning "to make great" or "to magnify."

In its theological usage, *rabah* underscores the faithfulness of God to His promises. The growth and prosperity of Israel are consistently viewed as a direct result of God's blessing, often tied to their obedience to the covenant. This is not merely a secular increase but a divine act that demonstrates God's power and commitment to His people and His redemptive plan. The concept of multiplication is central to the Abrahamic covenant, where God promises Abraham that his descendants will be as numerous as the stars of heaven.

While often positive, *rabah* can also describe an increase in negative things, such as sorrow or sin, highlighting its broad semantic range. For example, in Genesis 3:16, God tells Eve, "I will greatly multiply thy sorrow." This demonstrates that the verb itself is neutral, taking its positive or negative valence from the context in which it is used. The richness of this term lies in its ability to express various forms of augmentation, both literal and figurative, reflecting the multifaceted nature of God's interaction with creation and humanity.
