Greek · Strong's G3107

μακάριος

makários (mah-KAH-ree-os)

adjective

This term describes a state of supreme well-being and favor, often divinely bestowed, resulting in joy and prosperity.

The Greek word makarios, often translated "blessed" or "happy," denotes a state of profound well-being and spiritual favor. Unlike the English word "happy," which often depends on circumstances, makarios describes an inner, enduring spiritual condition that is independent of outward fortune. It signifies a person who is exceptionally fortunate, not necessarily in material possessions, but in their relationship with God and their participation in His divine plan.

In the New Testament, makarios frequently appears in the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-11; Luke 6:20-22), where Jesus pronounces blessings upon those who are poor in spirit, mourn, are meek, hunger and thirst for righteousness, are merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers, and those persecuted for righteousness' sake. These blessings are not contingent on worldly success or comfort, but on a spiritual disposition and a right standing with God. The blessedness described by makarios is a gift from God, a declaration of His favor, and a promise of future reward.

The term extends beyond individual blessings to describe God Himself as "the blessed God" (1 Timothy 1:11), highlighting His inherent glory and perfect happiness. It also characterizes the hope of believers as "blessed hope" (Titus 2:13), referring to the joyous expectation of Christ's return. Thus, makarios encompasses both a present spiritual reality and a future eschatological hope, assuring believers of God's enduring goodness and ultimate triumph.
