What Romans 6:19 means

Paul admits he is speaking in human terms—using the slavery image—because of our limitations. The point is clear: just as you once eagerly presented your bodily members to impurity and ever-increasing lawlessness, so now present them to righteousness leading to sanctification. Former patterns reinforced themselves—sin bred more sin. In Christ, the same dynamic operates in holiness—obedience breeds deeper holiness. Sanctification is a process, an ongoing setting apart to God in character and conduct. The call is to redirect the same energies once given to sin toward righteous purposes, trusting that God’s grace will produce real growth in holiness.

Context

Building on verse 18’s declaration of new servitude, verse 19 applies the metaphor to daily practice. It acknowledges the illustration’s limits while urging wholehearted presentation of ourselves to righteousness. The verse signals the progressive nature of sanctification. Verses 20–21 will now prompt reflection on the former life’s fruitlessness and deadly end, while verse 22 contrasts the present path’s holy fruit and eternal life. Verse 23 will summarize the stark contrast as wages versus gift.

v.18and being made free from sin, ye became servants of righteousness.

v.19This passage

v.20For when ye were servants of sin, ye were free in regard of righteousness.
