What Mark 9:31 means

During their private journey through Galilee, Jesus continued to intensively teach His disciples. He plainly told them that the Son of Man would be betrayed into human hands, killed, and then rise again three days later. This is another clear and direct prediction of His passion and resurrection, a critical prophecy designed to prepare them, however difficult it was for them to grasp, for the pivotal events in Jerusalem.

Context

This verse directly states Jesus' purpose for desiring privacy: to focus on teaching His disciples. It follows His discreet travel through Galilee, immediately presenting the central theme of His instruction—His impending death and resurrection. This difficult truth, which the disciples struggle to comprehend, sets the stage for their subsequent misunderstanding about greatness and Jesus' correlating teaching on humility.

v.30And they went forth from thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it.

v.31This passage

v.32But they understood not the saying, and were afraid to ask him.
