What Luke 24:26 means

Jesus declares that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and then enter into His glory. Suffering and glory are not rivals but a divinely ordered sequence. The cross is the gateway to the crown. This line reframes everything they lamented: the betrayal, condemnation, and crucifixion were not derailments but the appointed path to redemption. Glory is not the absence of pain but the outcome of obedient suffering. With this, Jesus places the Messiah’s story into the mold of Scripture’s promises and patterns—Passover, sacrifice, deliverance—so that the third-day rising appears not as surprise but as plan fulfilled.

Context

This verse follows Jesus’ rebuke (v. 25) and states the thesis His exposition will prove: suffering first, then glory. It anticipates the detailed biblical survey in verse 27. The Emmaus narrative thus swings from human disappointment to divine necessity. Later in the chapter, Jesus will repeat the same logic to the eleven (vv. 46–47). The flow is intentional: establish the theological necessity, then unfold it from Scripture, then confirm it by personal recognition.
