What Matthew 19:27 means
Peter, seized by the moment, responded to Jesus by detailing the disciples' sacrifices: 'Lo, we have left all, and followed thee.' He then immediately asked, 'what then shall we have?' Peter's question, while perhaps self-interested, revealed a sincere desire for assurance and understanding of the future recompense for their radical commitment to Jesus, in light of the rich young ruler's inability to sacrifice.

Context
Following Jesus's declaration of God's power to save in verse 26, Peter articulates the disciples' direct application of the teaching to their own lives. His question about their reward highlights the human tendency to seek recompense for sacrifice, setting the stage for Jesus's extensive promises of future glory and present blessings for those who follow Him.
v.26And Jesus looking upon them said to them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
v.27This passage
v.28And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, that ye who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
